About the Book:
Kristan “Stan” Connor gladly turned tail on her high-flying job and moved to a quaint New England town to sell organic pet treats. But with her nose for solving murders, there’s no such thing as a quiet life…
Summer is winding down in Frog Ledge, Connecticut, but Stan’s love life and career are both heating up nicely. In between planning her new pet patisserie and café, Stan is settling into living-in-bliss with sexy pub owner Jake McGee. Love’s on the menu for Stan’s mom, Patricia, too, who’s engaged to Frog Ledge’s mayor, Tony Falco.
Mayor Falco’s dogged ambition isn’t popular among locals, but it’s his executive coach, Eleanor Chang, who’s inspired a dangerous grudge. When Eleanor is found dead, there’s a whole pack of suspects to choose from. Stan has first-hand experience of Eleanor’s unsavory business tactics. But finding out who forced her to take a fatal plunge off the corporate ladder means unearthing some shady secrets…and a killer who’s too close for comfort.
Includes Gourmet Pet Food Recipes!

Stan left the corporate world and moved to the small town of Frog Ledge, Connecticut and never looked back. In a previous book, Stan's snooty mother, Patricia made her way to Frog Ledge and never left. In fact, she's getting ready to marry Tony Falco, the mayor of Frog Ledge. When Stan and Jake arrive at the engagement party being held for her mom and Tony, it's like she never left her old life. Stan comes face-to-face with former colleagues that include Eleanor, the mayor's new executive coach, Richard, Stan's ex, and Michelle who is now dating Richard.
When Eleanor is found dead at the engagement party, Stan discovers that the list is long of those who had motive. It also appears that that mayor's office and the Major Crimes division are trying to cover up what happened. Stan realizes she must figure out who the murderer is when the cops arrest, charge, and arraign someone that she is 100% positive didn't commit the crime.
Previously, Jake and his dog, Duncan, moved into Stan's home she shares with several rescue cats and dogs. Stan runs the organic pet treat/food business out of her kitchen, so at any given time there's also Brenna, her assistant (and Jake's sister) baking. Stan, Jake, Brenna, and Patrica spend some time finalizing more of the plans for Stan's pet patisserie and café. Early in the novel, Stan's sister, Caitlyn, also shows up at her door with her daughter Eva in tow, rounding out the chaos nicely.
The twists and turns in Custom Baked Murder will definitely keep the reader guessing. There are several people that Stan is forced to be around that fit the bill of murder suspect. Every time someone is suspected, the author has written the case so well that you can't help but believe you've figured out who was behind the murder. The perfect murder mystery, whether it's a cozy novel or not, is the author's ability to not give away any clues to the actual person involved. I find that Liz Mugavero does just that in all of the books in this series.
Book 5 is a wonderful addition to the Pawitively Organic Mystery series. Custom Baked Murder is fast paced and totally engages the reader. The plot is pretty solid and very unique. I love the organic pet food angle and the animal rescue plugs, giving this series a nice change of pace. I'm a huge fan of cozy mysteries, especially if there are animals involved in some positive way. The Pawsitively Organic Mysteries by Liz Mugavero are wonderful and definitely a favorite of mine.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book.
… delightful, full of charm and such strong characters that they jump off the pages.
Animal lover extraordinaire Stan is one of my favorite fictional heroines, so I’m always looking forward to reading her latest adventure.
From the very beginning of the book, this fast-paced mystery is full of charming pets and an entertaining protagonist, Kristan “Stan” Connor.
This was a well written cozy that flowed really well. I was turning pages because I was so engrossed. This one left me guessing to the very end.
This was an enjoyable read. I really loved it… A good book to read on a cold day. There were twists and turns and the plot was great.
What a great cozy mystery this was. I started to read the book thinking I would read a few chapters and come back later to read more. To my surprise I really tried to put the book down but it was so good I had to keep reading.
Meet the Author:
Liz Mugavero has been writing stories since she could hold a pen. Before that, she would tell them to anyone who would listen (not many at the time). After deciding early on she would write books for a living, she practiced by writing bad, angst-filled poems, short stories and even a storyline for a soap opera–all by age 15. She never wavered from her goals despite all the usual questions including, “So are you going to be an English teacher with that degree in English?” or, “That writing thing sounds nice, but how are you REALLY going to make a living?”
She went on to get a master’s in writing and publishing and spent time in journalism, PR, and presently, corporate communications. And she’s confident this writing thing IS the way to make a living.
Aside from writing, she loves animals (has a houseful), the beach, reading other writers’ masterpieces and Starbucks coffee.
