About the Book:
With their coven’s spell book still missing, Molly and Elsie—along with their ghostly friend Olivia, her daughter Dorothy, and her boyfriend Brian—are all on edge, especially now that Dorothy’s infamously wicked father is back in the picture. So when they receive an invitation to an exclusive Witches Ball, the ladies jump at the chance to dress up and have some fun.
The castle locale is spectacular and the party is hopping, but the festivities come to a swift end when a member of the Grand Council of Witches is murdered. With the whole place on lock down, the coven is determined to find the cunning killer, even with an angry council and a real Spanish Inquisitor breathing down their necks...
Putting on the Witch is book 3 in the Retired Witches Mystery series by Joyce and Jim Lavene.
Molly, Elsie, Olivia, Dorothy, and Brian are back! This time they are picking themselves off of the floor after the bombshell that is Dorothy's father shows up at their shop. Olivia is beside herself, since she did everything she could to protect Dorothy by hiding her away from Drago.
Shortly thereafter, the friends all receive invitations to Brian's birthday party - his grandfather is on the Grand Council of Witches. Excited but filled with trepidation, everyone suits up in the finest frockery that the local witch emporium has and away they go. When a certain uninvited ghost pops out in the middle of the foyer the group rushes to an unoccupied room to chastise Olivia. Only, when they get there the dying body of a Council member is found on the floor.
The Council then brings in Antonio, their witchbringer, to find out who killed one of their own.
Putting on the Witch is another great book in the series. Molly, Elsie, and Olivia are fantastic main characters. They are strong and feisty. Dorothy and Brian are great supporting members that have developed a bit more in book 3. The Council, even in book 3, has proven to be useless until after our feisty witches have made headway into the mystery du jour. Sure the witches get into trouble but what cozy mystery main doesn't?! Each witch is written in a way that the reader will feel like they've known these women forever.
The plot is developed nicely with several twists tossed in to keep the reader guessing. The murder was set up wonderfully and had me changing my mind about who orchestrated the death of the council member. The appearance of Drago, Olivia's ex and Dorothy's father, added another element of mystery to the story. I really enjoyed the witchbringer's character. He truly was a Spanish Inquisitor at the beginning of the book and wanted to torture each witch until he found the murderer. Molly's calm demeanor and the fact that we just don't do that kind of thing in polite society anymore evolved our torturer into someone else.
If you're looking for a different kind of witch story then look no further. Spell Booked will keep you engaged with humor, wit, and the overall unique take on the life cycle of a witch. The plot flows nicely; not too fast or too slow. I enjoyed the book from the first to the last page. I will miss our Retired Witches.
I received a complimentary copy of this book.
