My Review:

Derek Warner and the rest of the Search and Rescue Team have been called to demonstrate their abilities in front of a class on a field trip. While Derek is discussing his job and what it entails, a boy from the class walks out onto the ice. When he breaks through and disappears, the class gets to see first hand how a rescue team works. After all the chaos dies down, two little girls from the class disappear.

Artemis Rey can't believe that the person demonstrating search and rescue is her old flame, Derek. When Chase falls through the ice and his two classmates disappear, her only solace in the situation is that Derek is trained to help in both situations. But when they get paired together to search for the girls, everything that both Artemis and Derek have kept buried bubbles back to the surface with a vengeance.

Katie Ruggle is a new author for me and the free prequel has me hooked on her Search and Rescue series.  On His Watch is an engaging romantic suspense novel. The serious parts of the book - the ice rescue and the search for the girls - isn't overshadowed by the romance. The sparks are evident between Artemis and Derek yet they don't let them interfere (much) with the search for the girls.

The author's writing style is great.  I was engaged quickly and the content kept me focused.  I plan to continue the series as the storylines are interesting.  Katie weaves several themes throughout the story, keeping the book from becoming stale.  There isn't so much going on that detracts from anything, either.

The characters were well developed, especially since this is a novella.  The world building was good even though there is a spot in the novella regarding a cabin and footprints that wasn't really explored much beyond the initial discovery.  I hope that more of that comes to light in one of the next books, otherwise it was just a random filler that was a bit longer than necessary.  Otherwise, the novella was great.

About the Book:

In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder…

As the captain of Field County’s ice rescue dive team, Callum Cook is driven to perfection. But when he meets new diver Louise “Lou” Sparks, all that hard-won order is obliterated in an instant. Lou is a hurricane. A walking disaster. And with her, he’s never felt more alive…even if keeping her safe may just kill him.

Lou’s new to the Rockies, intent on escaping her controlling ex, and she’s determined to make it on her own terms…no matter how tempting Callum may be. But when a routine training exercise unearths a body, Lou and Callum find themselves thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who will stop at nothing to silence Lou—and prove that not even her new Search and Rescue family can keep her safe forever.

My Review:

Louise "Lou" Sparks is a newbie to the Search and Rescue team, to the area, in fact.  Her move to the Rocky Mountains puts a considerable amount of space between herself and both her parents and her ex.  No longer willing to be their doormat, Lou wants to prove to herself that she can be on her own and survive.  Except, months after settling in, Lou starts noticing odd things that indicate she has a stalker.  Fortunately, Lou has captured the watchful eye of Callum Cook, captain of the search and rescue team.

Since Lou walked on-scene, Callum has noticed everything about her.  During a training session, Lou dislodges a body and both Lou and Callum who the body is and how it ended up where it did.  As the investigation continues, Callum discovers that Lou has been having some trouble.  When he realizes just what types of issues Lou has been facing recently, he becomes protective of her and infuriated at the thought of someone harassing her.  Callum makes it his responsibility to keep an eye on her.

Hold Your Breath is the first full length book in Katie Ruggle's Search and Rescue series and I loved it.  The world building and character development is spectacular.  The interactions between Louise "Lou" Sparks and Callum Cook are witty and full of chemistry.  The sparks that fly when they are in the same vicinity are undeniable.  Katie does a wonderful job of bringing together two characters romantically but doesn't overshadow the murders, stalkers, and other serious parts of the book.

The author's writing style is great.  I was engaged quickly and the content kept me focused.  Katie weaves several themes throughout the story, keeping the book from becoming stale, but not so much that the reader feels confused or overwhelmed.  The characters were well developed and Lou and Callum are really likeable and realistically written.  Hold Your Breath is an engaging romantic suspense novel.

As much as I love Callum from Hold Your Breath and Derek from Under His Watch (who is also his awesome self in Hold Your Breath), I can't wait to read about hot firefighter, Ian, in the next book.

About the Book:

As a Motorcycle Club member and firefighter, Ian Walsh is used to riding the line between the good guys and the bad. He may owe the Club his life, but his heart rests with his fire station brothers…and with the girl he’s loved since they were kids, Rory Sorenson. Ian would do anything for Rory. He’d die for her. Kill for her. Defend her to his last breath—and he may just have to.

Every con in the Rockies knows Rory is the go-to girl for less-than-legal firearms, and for the past few years, she’s managed to keep the peace between dangerous factions by remaining strictly neutral. But when she defends herself against a brutal attack, Rory finds herself catapulted into the center of a Motorcycle Club war—with only Ian standing between her and a threat greater than either of them could have imagined.

My Review:

Ian is in the hot seat with not only his motorcycle club but the local police station.  Apparently it's not okay to be a firefighter and an MC member and unfortunately, Ian learns that the hard way.  His life begins to turn upside down in the previous book when his very well-known pendant ends up at a crime scene.  Then he takes sides with the local arms dealer - of legal and not-so-legal weaponry.

Rory's firearms business is the legacy she has from her parents.  Her parents taught her to be self-sufficient and prepared for anything and everything.  However, what they didn't teach her was how to be social.  When Ian, the man she's known since she was 12 finally has the courage to confront her about his feelings, she's so inept that she doesn't know what to do or how to proceed.

Her awkwardness takes a back seat to the problems brewing at her gun shop when people begin stalking her property at night.  Things take a turn for the worse when vandals break in and two of them are killed inside the shop, one is left tied up out in the snow, and the last one backs himself into a corner.  Most of the intruders are MC members, which lengthens the expanse between Ian and his "family," but also drags Rory into a conflict that neither of them could have ever imagined.

Katie Ruggle's Search and Rescue series is phenomenal.  The world building and character development in each book is extraordinary.  I love the awkwardness between Rory and Ian.  Both characters have tough exteriors but inside each has their own set of insecurities.  I love how they explore those insecurities together, whether they wanted to or not.  The chemistry between Rory and Ian is unmistakable and their relationship is fleshed out nicely - slowly and so realistic.  The romance is one of several key themes but it doesn't overshadow the seriousness of the events that unfold in both Ian's world and Rory's world - worlds that may seem distinctly different but get entangled into one giant mess.  Katie Ruggle does a superb job with these characters not only with their romance but with the struggles each faces in Fan the Flames.

Katie Ruggle's writing style is wonderful; her worlds just flow across the pages smoothly, easily, and powerfully. I was engaged immediately and the content kept me focused. There are several themes weaved throughout the story, keeping the book from becoming stale, but not so much that the reader feels confused or overwhelmed. The characters were well developed and Rory and Ian are really likeable and realistically written.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves romantic suspense!
