About the Book:

Anastasia wanted to be a witch. One of her friends even found a spell to give her magic. But before the spell is over, Anastasia dies. She wakes up in Hell, having to serve a purgatory sentence for her crime.

When Anastasia is suddenly ripped out of Hell and brought topside, Ezra, a demon working for Lucifer, is told to send her soul down below. When he finds her, there are questions that must be answered. He decides to keep her alive until he knows her friends won’t resurrect her again.

While he still has Anastasia, he’s sent on another assignment. They have to work together to stop a murderer. But as she and Ezra grow closer, the decision to get away from him becomes harder. To save her life and find out the truth behind her death, she must leave the only person who has made her ever feel alive.

My Review:

Bring Me to Life starts out with four friends performing a ritual in order to obtain magical powers. Unfortunately, one of the friends, Anastasia, is killed in the process. She finds herself serving a 10 year sentence in purgatory for working with dark magic. Anna adjusts to her sentence as best can, and then she's ripped from purgatory and brought back to life...sort of. The same friends that accidentally killed her were somehow able to bring her back to life. Everyone thinks she's dead so Anna isn't sure what to do next.

Ezra, a hellion (demon), does Lucifer's bidding. When he's instructed to locate and kill (again) a young girl who mysteriously disappears from purgatory, Anna is not what he was expecting. Knowing that she's dabbled in the dark arts, Ezra doesn't fulfill Lucifer's instructions. He needs more intel on the friends who resurrected Anna. They cannot be allowed to keep pulling her out of purgatory - their method and required means of doing such things is less than admirable. While planning out his strategies, Lucifer calls upon Ezra for another job; a job to do with Anna in-tow.

Except, the longer Anna and Ezra are together the less Anna hates Ezra and the closer they become. This is such a catch-22 story. Ezra is commissioned to kill Anna since her life on earth is over, thanks to her magic wielding friends. Her resurrection is against anything Heaven and Hell stand for. Anna is on pins-and-needles waiting for the precise moment that Ezra is going to use his special dagger on her and send back down below. It's hard to develop a romance when the terms of them being together in the present have a very unhappy ending in the near future. Yet, they continue on while Ezra works on his additional case.

There are such tender moments in Bring Me to Life between Ezra and Anna. I would cringe when either of them said or did anything toward the other that wasn't nice. The author did a really great job developing the characters of Ezra and Anna. Who they are at the beginning are not who they are at the end; their evolution through the pages is dynamic.

I enjoyed the see-saw components of the book. Would he kill her today? Will she ever really kiss him? One day there is compassion and caring in the eyes of both Ezra and Anna and the next day there is pain, sadness, fear. Their emotions are realistic and believable. I felt drawn to them as a reader. I really liked the changing perspectives; Ezra's POV in one chapter, Anna's in the next, then Ezra, and so on.

The book is quite engaging. Readers will be pulled in from the very beginning. The book is a smooth and easy read that you won't want to put down. You'll be drawn to the circumstances that caused Anna's death, that bring Ezra to her, and you'll need to know if Ezra actually has the heart to fulfill Lucifier's assignment.

My Rating:

Meet the Author:

Nicole "Cappie" Thorn was born in California but, after a stint in Kansas, moved to a suburb of Phoenix. She spends a lot of her free time knitting and reading from her massive book collection. Her eclectic tastes, like Disneyland, Buffy and all things London, carry into her writing. She started writing in her early twenties and finds it wonderfully addictive.
