About the Book:

The first book in the delicious new Emergency Dessert Squad Mystery series from national bestselling author Laura Bradford.

With her rent rising faster than her pie crust, bakery owner Winnie Johnson had hoped to be rescued by an inheritance from her wealthy friend and neighbor Gertrude Redenbacher. Instead all she inherits is the widow’s hostile hissing tabby, Lovey, and a vintage ambulance, restored by Gertrude’s late husband. As her dream crumbles, Winnie makes her final delivery—a peach pie to an elderly widower. But she finds Bart Wagner lying on his kitchen floor, smothered by a pillow.

To comfort her frightened and grieving neighbors, Winnie comes to the rescue with her baked goods—and an idea is born: dessert delivery via her ambulance and a new business called the Emergency Dessert Squad. When she’s not speeding to the scenes of dessert emergencies, Winnie is also racing to track down Bart’s killer—before she needs to call a real ambulance for the next victim…

My Review:

Winnie is having the worst day ever!  Her bakery is being shuttered due to an outrageous hike in her rent and the method she was hoping to save it, an inheritance, wasn't exactly what she had hoped it would be.  To top it off, she discovers the body of recent widower, and neighbor, dead on his kitchen floor.  Now, she and the rest of her neighbors are scared because there is a killer on the loose.  To help keep her neighborhood safe, Winnie takes it upon herself to "help" in the catching of a killer.

Éclair and Present Danger has to have the most unique concept I've read in a cozy mystery.  A vintage ambulance as a dessert delivering service?  Yes, please!  The creativity of the author makes this novel such a wonderful reading experience.  I was pulled in from the very beginning and kept thoroughly engaged in the story and it's cast of multifaceted characters.  I'm glad I was given the opportunity to read and review this title.

The world building and character development is done really well.  I love all of the characters, main and supporting.  They are written with realism and are believable.  I enjoyed getting to know everyone; Winnie, Bridget and Mr. Nelson, Greg and Renee, and everyone else.   The concept behind the Emergency Dessert Squad is clever and the dessert names are awesome!

One of the best things about this book is that I can relate to the protagonist regarding her choice of companions.  Winnie, in a conversation with Greg, Master Sergeant Hottie ::wink::, discusses her choice of living arrangements.  She lives in what is dubbed the senior section of Silver Lake.  Winnie surrounds herself with senior citizens, as she is more comfortable around the older generations.  This resonated with me because as I was growing up and even well into my late 20's, I preferred the company of elders over those in my own age group.

I love Éclair and Present Danger and can't wait to see what's in store next.

My Rating:

I truly enjoyed the scenarios that the author created and thought that they were very clever.

Éclair and Present Danger is well written and it is an original concept.

Well let me tell you, Laura just gained herself a new lifelong fan! ÉCLAIR AND PRESENT DANGER is a smart, snappy read and I was struck over and over again how absolutely creative the author is.

This book is fast paced the way that I like it. Just the right amount of suspense and mystery.

…a fun new mystery with a feisty cast of characters.

The characters are funny, resourceful and downright a blast to read about.

ÉCLAIR AND PRESENT DANGER was a delightful read which brought many a smile to my face.

…is a really wonderful book. The story grabs you from the first page and keeps you entertained until the last page.

Once I started reading I could not put the book down.

This story had a unique cast of characters, and was a great introduction to this new series.

Eclair and Present Danger is everything a cozy mystery should be! Laura Bradford has created the perfect recipe for fans of the genre – winsome characters, humor, quirky pet, cute small business, and a whodunit that isn’t immediately obvious.

This book is all kinds of fun. The character’s are a mixed bunch of young and old, many older as Winnie lives in a senior community. The author did a wonderful job of giving voices to these different aged characters, keeping them in their roles and keeping me in stitches.
