A deal with the Devil. Demons haunting your every step. When an Angel offers you the chance to redeem yourself, you take it. Because eternal damnation isn't all it's cracked up to be.
But the Devil always gets his due.
On the streets of Baltimore redemption is..... Payable On Death.
When Jax is 17 she does what she thinks it right in order to save her mother - and now the devil owns her soul. Jax spends the next 5 years trying to redeem the mistake she made by way of good deeds and volunteering until one day the world as she knows it crumbles down around her feet. Her friend Tommy, the appearance of Dane, and the mind-bending reality of Jax's new world are almost too much to bear. Especially when the Devil is breathing down her neck and beckoning her home.
Welcome to Jax's new life - until the Devil comes to collect!
Payable On Death is an engaging, action packed urban fantasy novel. Jax is a strong, independent woman that has learned to take care of herself. She is no-nonsense and kick ass. Her guardian angel is a secret keeper and has earned no gold stars from Jax when she learns the truth. She's also thrust into the arms of Dane, a sin eater.
Some of the book seems rushed and there are areas where topic shifts are abrupt and uncomfortable. I realize that this is the first book and there is a lot of world building and character development that goes on to get readers up to speed. The author's world, while tumultuous, is crafted pretty well despite some of the hiccups. I found myself not wanting to put the book down, very interested in what Jax and Dane were going to become involved in next.
I liked the book for the most part. I was on the edge of my seat through many of the action scenes, including near the end. I look forward to the next book in the series and am excited to see where Jax and the Devil tangle with each other next. Many reviewers have likened this book to Constantine and there are many similarities; however, the author does include a lot more original content. Don't let the resemblance dissuade you from checking out Payable On Death. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable Rachel Rawlings' angels vs demons storyline is in this new adult urban fantasy novel.
