Book #Review ~ Dose Vidanya (Silver Hills Cozy Mysteries, Book One) by Sam Cheever

Welcome to my review of Dose Vidanya!

About the Book:

Silver Hills Senior and Singles Residence isn’t exactly a boring place. Home to a death predicting cat named Tolstoy, a night manager who may or may not suck blood and float above the floor, a cook with mad voodoo and pie baking powers, and a trio of nosy sleuths who are determined to get to the bottom of the corpse in the library (maybe literally)...some might say things couldn’t get any weirder. Some would be wrong.

My Review:

When the new employee from the kitchen ends up stiff as a board in the library, the death is deemed to be from natural causes.  The two women that find him, Flo and Agnes, aren't quite sure natural causes would be correct.  As they, along with TC, begin their own amateur sleuthing into the case, it becomes more evident that foul play is involved.  More things happen that can only be tied to the death in the library.  Now Flo, Agnes, and TC just have to figure out who in their small senior and singles residence is causing all of the problems and why - and before anyone else gets hurt or dead.

Dose Vidanya is a cozy mystery with several twists and turns.  Just when I thought I had the mystery figured out, something would happen to blow my theory right out of the water.  The author did a wonderful job keeping the culprit under wraps until it was time to reveal him/her/them.  I enjoyed the unique setting and the animals, Tolstoy and Roland, as they were instrumental in a few areas. The characters are witty and likable, yet brainless and lacking common sense.

Flo and Agnes were a homicide detective's worst nightmare.  Unable to help themselves, both women contaminated crime scene after crime scene.  They also hid evidence or neglected to report things to the proper authorities.  Both of them should have been arrested and hauled off to jail on more than one occasion.  For being a little older, neither character acted like they were more than 5 or 6 years old sometimes. The overuse of "blowing raspberries" became an annoyance and after the first four mentions, I actually started rolling my eyes when one of the characters would display such a juvenile action.

Those problematic things aside, the book was engaging.  The mysterious death will keep a reader focused on turning pages in the quest to tie all of the revealed threads together.  If you're looking for a cozy mystery that is easy to get lost in, grab Dose Vidanya.  The good parts of the book far outweigh the few negatives that I noticed.

It will be interesting to see what sort of trouble Flo, Agnes, and TC can get themselves into next!

Read a Small Excerpt:

“Let me get this straight, ladies,” Detective Brent Peters growled out. “You saw a dead guy sitting in a chair so you proceeded to fling him to the floor, crawl around underneath him, and then break his wrists before letting your cat use him for a butt rest?”

Flo chewed her bottom lip, her gaze sliding guiltily toward Agnes. “When you put it that way it sounds odd.”

Brent’s golden eyebrows peaked. “Doesn’t it?”
