When Love is Our Greatest Asset
Anna del Mar
When I first submitted the romance that eventually became The Asset to Carina Press, it was titled by a different name. I was pleased with the novel’s original name, so I was surprised when my editor at Carina came back with the idea of renaming the novel. A romance called The Asset, I told myself. Could it work?
The Asset is the first novel of my Wounded Warrior series, a collection of heart-warming romances about the smart, strong, self-reliant heroines struggling to find their places in the world and the brave, sexy, kickass, military heroes who challenge their limits to protect the women they love. In The Asset we meet Ash Hunter, a Navy SEAL wounded in Afghanistan who’s fighting to overcome his injuries when he finds himself staring down the barrel of Lia Stuart’s shotgun.
Lia is a fugitive, hiding in a small Rocky Mountain town, desperately trying to escape her terrifying past. She may not be a SEAL and she’s definitively keeping secrets, but Ash recognizes her for who she really is: a fighter and a survivor, the kind, caring, passionate woman he could love, if only she wasn’t so afraid to let him. When she risks her cover to help him, Ash commits to a new mission: He will lay down his life to save hers. Together, Lia and Ash must defeat the evil that threatens to destroy their lives as they struggle to heal, not only Ash’s broken body but Lia’s shattered soul.
The beauty of The Asset and, indeed, of all of the novels of the Wounded Warrior series, is that they’re stories about hope, resilience, redemption, and above all, about love’s extraordinary healing power. These romances are inspired by the men and women I met during my years as a Navy wife and most importantly, by our country’s greatest heroes, the wounded warriors who have given so much to protect us and who teach us every day the true meaning of courage, determination, honor and love.
As I fictionalized these warriors’ journeys, I realized that in life, love is truly our greatest asset. In the story, Lia and Ash’s relationship evolves. They go from strangers to friends and from friends to lovers. As they do so, they truly became other’s greatest assets. And I thought: how great is that? Isn’t that the true about the people who love us? They are the number one assets in our lives. Thus The Asset came to be.

Soon, Ash realizes he’s not the only one tormented by the past. Pushing the limits of his broken body, testing the boundaries of her shattered soul, he’ll protect Lia until his last breath.
Read a Teaser:
When Ash and Neil went out for their evening walk, I slipped on a T-shirt and my old pajama pants and arranged my pillow and blanket on the couch. I was in the process of starting a fire in the living room’s hearth when they came back. Neil made a straight line for me, splayed on the ground and, pawing the air, flashed his belly.
Ash’s stare shifted from the couch to me. He sighed, stepped to the couch and, after bundling my pillow and blankets, threw them over his shoulder and started up the stairs.
“Hello?” I followed him. “That’s my pillow.”
“You’re not sleeping downstairs.”
“Who gave you the power to decide where I sleep?”
“Reason and common sense.” He plodded to his room and, without hesitation, added my blankets to his bed and propped my pillow next to his.
“Ashton Hunter,” I said. “You’re definitively crossing a line here.”
He flashed me a stoic look. “Then can we please cross it quickly?”
