Is Energy Heiress Truly in the Dark about the identity of Electromancer?

Exclusive to the Kensington City Examiner

Deciding to show up unannounced—ambush journalism is one of my specialties—I was greeted at the front door of Alexa Manchester’s mansion by the sober, but extraordinarily handsome butler, Sigfred Sawyer. When I asked to see his employer, he tried to put me off, but after I told him that I’d interviewed superhero Electromancer the day before, he relented. Moments later, Ms. Manchester came down the stairs and invited me into her study. In a flash, that gorgeous butler, Sawyer, had served us delicious tea and divine scones prepared by Manchester’s longtime chef, the renowned but high-strung Yon Yurdlemon. In the interests of journalistic integrity, this reporter must acknowledge that Sigfred Sawyer’s presence was a bit of a distraction—servant or not, what a hunk!
DA:     Ms. Manchester, I interviewed Electromancer recently, and your name came up.
AM:     I’ve read about her exploits in the newspaper. A breath of fresh air in these troubled times.
DA:     Electromancer says that she has some connection to the Electromite. Your late father discovered the Electromite. Which means that you must have some sort of relationship with Electromancer. And with all these power outages that are occurring at plants that your company owns—
AM:     If you print that, I’ll be forced to call my lawyers. Electromite, the meteorite that my father discovered, is a force for good, an inexhaustible energy source that will solve the world’s energy problems.
DA:     Your power plant here in Kensington City is called The Mick.
AM:     Yes, named after my father, Mickey Manchester.
DA:     Why did The Mick blow up?
AM:     That’s under investigation.
DA:     Some claim you sabotaged it to drive energy prices go up. Also sabotaged your plant in The Big Apple.
AM:     I had nothing to do with that. There’s a man named Momo the authorities should be looking for. That’s where you’ll find your answers.
DA:     Your fiancée, Mayor Bobby Baumgartner, claims that there is no Momo. How do you respond to that?
AM:     Mayor Baumgartner is not my fiancée. Well, he is my fiancée, but he’s not … [At this point, the sexy butler, Sawyer, stomped out of the room for reasons unknown.] Anyway, Momo is all too real. Bent on taking over the world.
DA:     Have you ever heard of someone who goes by the name of Blue Arrow?
AM:     My father used to tell me stories about him. An archer who’s part man, part cloud.
DA:     Let me ask you about your butler. Good-looking fellow, don’t you think? You must find yourself distracted by someone that drop-dead handsome.
AM:     [Ms. Manchester blushed.] I don’t know what you mean. He’s my employee.
DA:     I also understand that your hot-tamale butler is known to wield a large umbrella. Is there any truth to that?
AM:     [Blushing again.] I beg your pardon! Where do you hear such things?
DA:     I have my sources. In fact, Ms. Manchester, I feel like I know everything there is to know about you.
AM:     I’m engaged to The Mayor. Well, not exactly engaged … it’s complicated and has nothing to do with this interview. In fact, this interview is over.
DA:     [Alexa Manchester suddenly rose from her chair and stormed out of the room.]
AM:     Sigfred, see this “lady” out immediately.
SS:       It’d be my pleasure, Madame. You know how I dislike the media.
DA:     Just a few more questions, Ms. Manchester! [When I tried to follow her, that foxy valet, Sigfred Sawyer, accosted me, umbrella in hand. It was indeed an imposing umbrella.]
SS:       Right this way … what is your name again?
DA:     If you wouldn’t mind, I have a few questions I’d like to ask you, Mr. Sawyer.
SS:       If you don’t mind my saying so, you can find your answers in the novel, Electromancer.
DA:     Believe me, big boy. I’ve read that book more than anyone in these parts. I do appreciate the recommendation though.
There’s more to this Sawyer fellow than meets the eye, I’m sure. In any event, I was unceremoniously shown the door. In this reporter’s opinion, these individuals have something to hide. I intend to find out exactly what that is, and there’s only one person whom I think can now clarify matters—Mayor Bobby Baumgartner, the presumed-to-be next prime minister of our mother homeland, Britannia.

Excerpt from Chapter 1
(The making of a superhero)

Alexa started for the elevator, but Chin led her to the stairs. They descended four levels and opened the two-foot steel door to the generator room that housed The Magpie. No workers were present. Maybe they’d all gotten out without injury.

“Wait here,” she told Chin.

“Ma’am, I—”

“You have a family, Charlie. I’m ordering you to stay here.” She paused. “This is my responsibility.”

When he reluctantly nodded, she entered the cavernous generator room. The normally ultra-bright lights inside the generator room had dimmed. A long row of generators with turbines that usually hummed and spun had gone silent. As she neared the control room, she heard only the echo of her high-heeled shoes tapping against the concrete floor. Alexa hurried along to The Magpie.

The generator was the size of a small house and resembled a child’s toy top sitting on a gigantic snare drum. To her surprise, the outer casing was glowing white hot.

The Magpie unexpectedly shook.

She listened for the sound of a spinning turbine. When she heard nothing, she reached out a hand to feel for anything different—a vibration, a change in temperature. The device was radiating heat. Impossible—her father had always said that the energy would never escape the insulated ceramic casing.

A second later, she was cast into the air as though she were bait at the end of a fishing rod. But instead of crashing to the floor, she remained suspended in midair above the top of the generator. Some sort of magnetic force had gripped her in a vise. Her ears filled with a high-pitched sound that was piercing but strangely pleasant. Her body went numb, melted, and she fell into a paralytic state. Paradoxically, she felt nothing and everything all at once. But there was no pain, only tranquility, as if she were in the midst of an improbable, yet wonderful dream. She could no longer see or hear or touch, because she no longer existed in human form. Still, she had a complete awareness of what her body had been. She was indefinable and yet remained conscious.

Suspended above the generator, she sensed something urging her to let go. She resisted, finding herself in a battle of wills to the death with The Magpie.

But machines didn’t have wills, so how could this be?

A memory of days past came to Alexa. She thought of the many times she’d followed her father along the tributaries of the Kensington. Gentle waves lapped against the smooth silt lining of the placid river. Often, she’d remove her shoes to let the sandy mud squish between her toes. Barefoot, she would walk along the shallows and collect unopened shells that she’d gather from just below the surface, hoping to find a freshwater pearl. Now, she flashed on how she’d never found that perfect pearl, which was an odd thought to have at this final moment. So, this was how her life would end.

She was no longer afraid. Morphing into a plasmatic state, she was pulled through The Magpie’s casing, as though she were subatomic particles able to penetrate anything. The deeper inside she traveled, the more at peace she felt. Once inside the inner core of the turbine, her life force was instantly absorbed into a pure-white spinning ball, which sparkled with beams of silver light. She’d finally found her pearl, and if this was heaven, she was home.

She was at peace.

“Electromancer,” a man whispered.

“What did you say?”

“You must leave here at once.”

A big thank you, Sapphyria, for having Electromancer on your show today!! I'm super excited to hear your thoughts about the story. When my publisher asked me to write it, I had no idea where the story would go. But now, I think I've combined the traditional era of comic books with romance with superheroes, and so far, it's been thumbs up.

I love hearing thoughts from readers, so everyone fire away and let's get flying at the speed of light.

And, hey everyone, don't forget to register for a chance to win that super-fantastic Amazon Echo! Or one of the several eBooks.

All the best,

You're welcome, Daco. I enjoyed having the interview on my blog today. I love learning more about a book or characters than what the blurb divulges!

I've had the privilege and pleasure of reading Electromancer, and it's terrific -- a combination of romance, paranormal, superhero thriller, and suspense. Reminiscent of campy classic comics and the steamiest romances, the writing is outstanding. A bonus -- the character interviews on the tour so far are both revealing and very funny. Highly recommended.
