Book Description:

She’s anxious, but she might also be right. I do hope it’s not the end of the world. What do I know about this kind of stuff? I’m not sure what else to think. The world hasn’t exactly been in the best shape recently.

The long extinct volcanoes of our island home, as well as other parts of the world, still show signs of erupting at any moment. Earthquakes are a daily occurrence. The sun has almost completely vanished, leaving the world in a state of constant twilight. Fire has been falling from the sky off and on here for the last few weeks; meanwhile, other parts of the world seem to be in the middle of a miniature ice age, and the bodies of water that aren’t frozen have steam rising from their surface.

I would hardly call any of this normal.

Read an Excerpt:

This movie isn’t so bad. In fact, I can’t help thinking how real these scenes look. The special effects are spectacular. I feel like I am in the movie. I feel like I am walking along a dark trail. There’s no moon, which makes it incredibly difficult to see. Shadow figures begin to stalk from side-to-side. A gang of dark figures emerges out of the darkness. I can’t tell how many there are. Dozens of pairs of demonic red eyes suddenly open and stare at me. I seem to have walked into some sort of trap.

Oh no, this isn’t part of the movie, I realize too late. The swarm of shadow creatures rushes toward me. I try to turn and run, but I can’t move. I’m paralyzed with fear. What is happening to me? Wait, this must be a dream. I just need to wake up. The feeling of paralysis increases my anxiety. The more I struggle, the harder it is to move. You’re alright, I hear Ash’s voice say in my head.

Whew, thank goodness; I thought I was going crazy. Ash is on a run. I must have fallen asleep during the movie, so I am seeing this play out through her eyes. In the vision, I see that Ash is laughing, but I can’t hear her laughing. I take that as my cue to check out. Everything goes black for a moment, and then I open my eyes.

I’m looking at the ceiling of my house. I notice I am sweating profusely. I may not be in the middle of the fight, but the feeling of fear is completely real. I try to shake it off. In the safety of my home I have nothing to worry about, I try to remind myself. Yet, I can’t seem to shake the feeling of someone watching me. I’m afraid to sit up. This is ridiculous. You’ve fought demons of all sorts, died a few times, and have always come out on top. Surely you can deal with your childhood fears of the boogeyman. I slowly sit up on the couch. The television isn’t even on. I wonder when I fell asleep. I hope it wasn’t during the movie. I try to rub the sleepiness out of my eyes. When I open them again, I am startled to see the image of a dark figure standing ominously behind me. I jump up from my seat, turn, and instinctively throw the first thing within reach at the figure, which happens to be a box of sour gummy candies.

Bloody…broken…barely surviving…

Danae “Dani” Espinoza is on the run and desperate to escape the demons of her past. Plans to hide out in a sleepy Los Angeles suburb turn into a pipe dream as she is drawn into the secret filled world of the local motorcycle club. Dani soon learns that her secrets and lies are nothing compared to those kept behind the clubhouse doors. Trying to avoid the suspicious Vice President, she must keep a low profile in order to survive. The trouble is he has other ideas.

Bike…babes…and booze…

Tyler "Hero" Tobias has simple needs. Being the Heaven's Rejects MC Vice President, he has all three at his disposal. But he has his own ghosts that keep him awake at night. When Dani arrives at the clubhouse, he knows he should stay away but there is something about her dark beauty and the mystery that surrounds her that makes him burn. There are secrets in her eyes and lies in her smile and he knows he should put his club first, but Hero’s heart and loyalty are about to be tested.

Can an angel with blood-covered wings and the devil himself resist temptation or will they risk bringing hellfire down on everything that they love?

Cold. All I can feel is a deep chill blanketing my body. My eyes open to complete darkness as a voice calls to me. Its muffled tones send shivers down my spine with every garbled word. A sense of familiarity floats around me as its words become clearer.

“Run, Dani,” it pleas from beyond the black veil shrouding the room. “Escape while you can,” it continues. Panic courses through my veins. Where in the hell am I? Why can’t I see anything? The pleas go unanswered as my voice fails to render sound.

“Help!” I scream internally, “Please, f*cking help me!”

The voice’s call fades with each word. “You need to get the hell out of here, Dani. You need to move. Find a wall and escape,” I coach to myself. A cold chill of air sweeps into the darkness encompassing me as I try to feel the place around me. My fingers plunge into a dense, sticky liquid as I crawl forward causing my body to slide with each movement. A hard surface is finally inching its way under my fingers.

Crawling upwards, I splay my hands against the cool wall. “You’re on your feet, Dani. The hardest part is over now. Time to find a door or a light switch, something to get us out of here,” my internal coach continues.

Keeping close to the wall, I finally find a switch. Flicking it upwards, the light shines brilliantly. As my eyes adjust to the light, my hands come into my vision. A scream barrels out of my throat when I see the sticky, red blood covering my hands and clothes. My heart races as I frantically wipe the blood away. Blood begins to pool at my feet, inching toward me. Rushing away from the blood, I fall backward into a solid, but warm obstacle. Before I can turn around, hands grasp my arms as a person’s hot breath trails down my neck.

“Hello, Dani,” a different voice whispers in my ear. “Welcome to Hell. You’re mine now,” the voice crackles as my body is pulled into black oblivion.

Book Review: Crushed Velvet (A Material Witness, Book 2) by Diane Vallere

From the Back Cover of the Paperback Book:

Fabric shop owner Polyester Monroe is back in business -- this time getting wrapped up in a diabolical but crafty case of murder.

With the opening of Material Girl approaching, Poly is stocking up on lush fabrics, colorful notions, and, best of all, a proprietary weave of velvet.  But upon delivery, it's not quite the blend she expected, being ninety percent silk and ten percent corpse.  Crushed under a dozen bolts of fabric is Phil Girard.  His wife, Genevieve, local tea shot owner and a close friend of Poly is the prime suspect.

Granted, Phil may not have been the perfect husband, but surely Genevieve had no reason to kill him!  There's just a small matter of Genevieve's own incriminating confession:  I'm afraid I killed my husband.  Now, as Material Girl's grand opening looms, Poly is torn between a friendship pulling apart at the seams -- and finding a smooth killer with a velvet touch...

My Review of Crushed Velvet:

Crushed Velvet is another great installment of Diane Vallere's A Material Witness series.

When a special order delivery of Poly's newest, original blend, fabric arrives at the shop, she's quite certain that her order didn't include the dead body of a man married to one of her friends, Genevieve. When Genevieve discovers Phil is dead inside the delivery, she disappears instead of waiting for the police - incriminating circumstance number one!  Sure that Genevieve has nothing to do with the murder of her husband, Poly's amateur detective skills come out in full force.

Unfortunately, many of the discoveries found by either herself or the police, point directly at Genevieve.  These include teas, croissants, a potential mistress, and more.  Then a mystery girl named Kim comes to the tea shop opened by Genevieve and insists that she was hired by Gen and that she had to work there.  As clues stack up and continue to appear, can Poly figure out how Phil ended up buried underneath bolts of fabric in the delivery van and prove that Genevieve didn't do it?

Throughout the book, there are several people that appear to have been capable of murder or at least part of the plan, including Phil's wife.  The reader will think they've figured out who was involved in the murder only to have the suspect or suspects cleared of any wrong doing or another person with as much or more motive enter the scene. You will go on a wild ride trying to figure out who the bad guy(s)/gal(s) are and who are innocent. I loved the twists and turns this cozy mystery takes you on as you try to figure out who was involved and why something this heinous was carried out.

I really enjoy Poly's character. She is generous and caring. She has dreams, goals, aspiration just like you and me. Even though she finds herself embroiled in another mystery and plays amateur sleuth, Poly is so believable and realistically written. Her ambition and realization of what she wants in life leads her to reopen the fabric store willed to her in book 1. The fact that another murder happens in her new town doesn't ruin her anticipation for the grand reopening of the store - it just adds a serious level of anxiety. Poly handles everything like the professional that she is. Of course she sticks her nose in where the police department would rather she not, but Poly isn't your typical cozy mystery heroine.

We learn a little bit more about the secondary characters we met in Book 1, as well. Poly's friendship with Charlie, the town's mechanic becomes strained at certain points but that happens in real life, too. There are misunderstandings between Poly and her potential love interest, Vaughn, which also bring realism to Crushed Velvet. I found this cozy mystery to be well thought out, pleasantly paced, and engaging.

My Review:

The Coffee Monster is a short, illustrated book that is suitable for children and adults.  The content deals with the consequences an addiction has on families.  This book of course focuses on an addiction to coffee and caffeine.  Everyone goes through a personal struggle at some point in life, whether it be an addiction, depression, or financially related (among others).

Nate Friedman's "The Coffee Monster" helps a family and their unconventional pet deal with a personal struggle of addiction.  The book focuses on honesty and asking for help when you feel you are out of control.  The development of the characters, issues, and eventual resolution to the Coffee Monster's problem make this short story an easy method of teaching children about an addiction and the solution to the problem.  The watercolor type illustrations are well done, as well.

My Review:

This short story focuses on a female vampire that has fallen in love with a human. Doing what she thinks is best, Sian dismisses her feelings for Taz and walks away. When she discovers an illegal blood farm and Taz as one of the captured victims, Sian decides to risk her life in order to save his.

Sian's Solution is a great introduction to Dale Mayer's Family Blood Ties series. The writing is well done and story is very interesting. Please note that I have not read any other books in this particular series by D.M. but overall, the content in Sian's Solution has piqued my interest enough to add them to my TBR pile.
