My Review:

Nails is a spine-tingling account of a mother's devotion long after the loss of a child.

After Carla exerts independence, signs a lease, and moves into her new yet older home, weird things begin to happen. Noises, voices, and a general feeling of being watched cause her elation at her new life to suddenly crash and burn. Plus, she's being pressured into moving back home and there's trouble in her love life.

Adulting is not nearly as enjoyable as Carla thought it would be. Determined to prove everyone wrong, Carla decides to stay in the home.....even if it means she never sleeps again. When her boyfriend, Josh, introduces her to his boss, she hopes his paranormal investigation experience can make whatever/whomever is in the home disappear.

During the paranormal investigation, Carla researches history about the house and finds tragic events. Shocked, Carla is determined to set the spirit free that inhabits the home. But the sinister nature of the haunting may prove to be more than what anyone can handle.

Nails is a short thriller that includes realistic character relationships and vivid imagery. The story is well developed for only being a 60 page novella. As the story progresses the suspense builds as Carla attempts to make sense of the mysterious goings-on inside the house. Her terror was palpable and transferred to the reader.  This novella is perfect for horror lovers looking for a quick, chilling tale.

Note from Fiona:

To celebrate the release of my novella, Nails, I am sharing an excerpt from a chapter. This story was so fun to write. Being an avid fan of the traditional ghost story, I wanted to create something that was creepy and sinister, but in a modern, homely setting. I wanted to take the gothic and Victorian chills of old tales like The Woman in Black and land it squarely into the modern world.

I hope you enjoy this sample, and if you find yourself wanting to read more after this, NAILS is currently available on Amazon for $0.99.

Tap, tap, tap.

Carla took slow steps towards the bedroom doorway and went into the chilly hall. She hesitated there, wanting to move forward but being scared to, a battle of her own will. . She could still hear it, from somewhere deep in the house, that rhythmic, undulating tap that seemed to grow louder with her every step.

“Who-who is this? Is it you, Alicia? Is this because of the terrible thing that happened to you?” Carla’s voice was swallowed by the house: no reply, no noise, nothing to indicate she'd spoken or been heard.

Carla descended the stairs at a creep, then as she reached the bottom she heard a noise from within the darkened kitchen. What sounded like sobbing. Her heart hammered unnaturally in her chest and she took hesitant steps towards the room.

Tap, tap, tap.

The growing storm outside seemed to subside until all there was left was the noise of the tapping, the movement deep within the shadows of the kitchen.

Shaking so much that she worried her knees would give way. Carla reached the doorway of the kitchen and reached out her unsteady hand until she found the light switch.

She flipped it on and screamed.
