"Since when did man’s best friend become his very own worst nightmare?" ~ Release Day Review: Baad Dog by Sal Conte

About the Book:

Since when did man’s best friend become his very own worst nightmare?

Harry wanted a dog.

He’d wanted a dog ever since his mother gave away the cute little mongrel pup he and his brother adopted when they were kids. His mom gave the dog away because Harry and Lenny didn’t take care of her as promised.

Now Harry is a grown man with children of his own. He brings home Queenie, a miracle of modern robotics who looks and acts just like a real dog. Big Mistake.

“One of the beauties of the K9-233 is that they don’t eat or poop.”

Harry’s wife, Pam, feels there’s something off about Queenie right from the beginning. And then strange things begin to happen: Harry’s five-year-old says Queenie talks to him. There’s the near fatal car accident after Harry makes Queenie spend the night in the garage for being naughty. But Harry loves Queenie—maybe a little too much. Will Harry realize there’s a murderous monster living under his roof before his entire family becomes dog food?

Baad Dog is a horror, sic-fi thriller with a twist from the author of 80s pulp horror classics Child’s Play and The Power. Sal Conte has been dubbed “the modern master of the surprise ending,” and this one is full of surprises.

My Review:

Baad Dog is a short thriller about a family who chooses an unconventional family pet. Queenie is a small dog brought home by Harry. Not at all impressed, Harry's wife Pam becomes distant and mistrustful of the new family pet when she begins to feel that there is something not quite right about Queenie. What ensues is a tale of unusual accidents that suddenly increase after Queenie is left on the charger too long.

By the time Harry realizes his mistake in purchasing this dog, it may be too late for his entire family. All is not well in the world of Harry. Will anyone survive the machinations of Queenie or will the family die at the paw of a cute and cuddly robot dog?

Sal Conte does a wonderful job building up the suspense and horror in Baad Dog. I was on the edge of my seat from the moment Harry entered the house with new dog and I read Queenie's reaction to Pam. The story draws the reader into its scary web and won't let go. It's a shorter and smoothly written read and I was able to finish it rather quickly.

Baad Dog is a fantastic October read if you're looking for something that will chill you to the bone. I'm a huge lover of small dogs, however, after reading Baad Dog, I don't think I'll ever look at them the same way again. I do believe that I'm going to be satisfied with my 50 lb. yellow lab mix who actually does eat and poop.

Oh, and if you think you know how the story ends....really - you don't!  Sal expertly wove twists and turns into the horror-filled novella that will keep you guessing.  I truly was creeped out at the ending and that's all I can think about right now.  This book will stay in your mind and you will question robotics on an entirely new level.

Please note that Baad Dog contains some adult language.
