My Review:

Max is unlucky when it comes to women, especially since his latest girlfriend just dumped him.  He can't keep a job either.  His most recent firing is due to a conversation with his bosses that a shell company involving insurance.  Max is almost sure that they are laundering drug money.  Now,  he has no woman, no job, and he's about to lose his condo. In an effort to keep his condo, Max agrees to live in an abandoned house for Ray, a mob boss and part of the insurance company.

Shortly after moving to the home, he rescues a beautiful woman from the tentacles of - a Kraken?  How can that be?  They are mythical, right?!  Well, considering the woman he rescues is a mermaid, I'm guessing Max's beliefs regarding mythology are about to become tested, especially since the mermaid, Azzaria, wants his help locating her sister, Bekkaul.

Bekkaul fell in love with a human, and when that happens, the mermaid will eventually come ashore, lose her tail, and become a human herself.

While trying to find Bekkaul, Max encounters quite a slew of characters and events.  Max deals with mobsters, finding treasure, very friendly dolphins, and a woman who professes to be able to hear and understand dolphins.   All of the interwoven storylines keep the novella a page turner.

The Memory of Mermaids is kind of rough in the dialogue area at some points, specifically the conversations between Ray and Max.  I suppose that may be because I detested Ray's character.  He is certainly written like a hardcore mobster.  The romance between Ray and Azzaria rather quick.  They really don't develop into a couple at all - there isn't a relationship that happens in the forefront of the novella.  They meet, hang out a couple times, have sex, and are a couple.  Those were really the only problems I had with the book.

The novella is actually pretty fast paced and engaging.  The combination of the modern world with the mythical one is intriguing.  Max may be down on his luck but he doesn't mope around.  He takes his task in finding Azzaria's sister quite seriously even when those around him think he's nuts.  Spencer does a great job tying all of the storylines together and wrapping up the story's loose ends.  There is an HEA in this short romance novel, too.

Meet the Man Behind the Book:

Spencer Dryden is a new writer, but an old guy on the threshold of draining any reserves left in Medicare and Social Security.

In real life he is a handyman, an at-home dad, inventor and web videographer living a quiet life in the frozen tundra of Minnesota (USA).

Like all writers he has a cat but they don't get along well. He can be found at the usual writer hangouts:
