Review: Take It Like A Vamp (Take It Like A Vamp, Book 1) by Candace Havens

About the Book:

Vampire Nick Christos might’ve been born in the Middle Ages, but the good old days seem tame compared to the last eight years he’s spent ruling the Supernatural Council. His only respite is with his cute neighbor Casey Meyers, a woman he wants more than any undead man should. Sure, he’s forced to take a cold shower after every encounter, but there’s no way he’ll test his own strength by getting too close to a human, and he’s not willing to risk her life–not with bloodthirsty family on the prowl out to ruin Nick’s life.

When said Nick’s kin shows up, the innocent Casey is caught in the middle of a centuries old fight, and Nick’s biggest fear is realized. Now, instead of keeping his hands off his neighbor, he’ll risk everything to save the human he’s come to love.

My Review:

Casey Meyers and Nick Christos are neighbors that have turned into great friends. Both want more out of their relationship but it's complicated: She doesn't think she's worthy (self-esteem issues) and he's, well, not human. When Nick makes the mistake of parading Casey around a huge gala, he endangers her life. Power-hungry members of his supernatural circle have done, and will do, anything to make Nick's life miserable - even if that means killing innocents and the ones he loves. Now, not only does have to profess his love to Casey, Nick has to fess up and tell her what he really is....and hope she's sticks around after hearing the news.

Nick is every woman's dream guy - hot, intelligent, and fun to be with. For those that are shallow, he's also rich. Casey doesn't care about his money and she'd love nothing more than to wake up next to his handsome face in the morning. Her self-esteem issues and dislike of her body type force her into one bad relationship after another, much to Nick's exasperation. She doesn't believe she's pretty, likable, or datable and, after awhile, her tendency to cut herself down actually becomes a bit tiring. She doesn't believe Nick or Linc (Nick's friend) when they hit on her and flirt.

Together, Nick and Casey are one large ball of sexual tension.  They want each other in a bad way but Nick keeps putting the brakes on anything that Casey may try.  Unknowingly, these actions by Nick resonate to Casey as she's not good enough to him.  This couple that started out as friends and want to become so much more have quite the situation to figure out.  Unfortunately, they have roughly a week before the council forces an arranged marriage on Nick that will leave Casey alone, unprotected, and heartbroken.

Take It Like A Vamp was a wonderfully written and fast paced paranormal book.  The story is fun and definitely hot and sexy.  The banter between Nick and Casey is great and the small amounts of inner dialogue provided by Casey is entertaining.  There was enough back story to let us know how Casey ended up living in Nick's building and how they became friends without fluffing up the story for the sake of more pages.  I enjoyed Book 1 in the Take It Like A Vamp series and will begin Book 2, Baby's Got Bite.
