Review: Any Given Doomsday (Phoenix Chronicles, Book 1) by Lori Handeland

Welcome to my 4-star review of Any Given Doomsday!

About Any Given Doomsday:

Elizabeth Phoenix once used her unique skills as a psychic to help in the Milwaukee Police Department’s fight against injustice. But when Liz’s foster mother is found viciously murdered—and Liz is discovered unconscious at the scene—her only memory of the crime comes in the form of terrifying dreams...of creatures more horrific than anything Liz has seen in real life. What do these visions mean? And what in the world do they have to do with her former lover, Jimmy Sanducci?

While the police question Jimmy in the murder, Jimmy opens Liz’s eyes to a supernatural war that has raged since the dawn of time in which innocent people are hunted by malevolent beings disguised as humans. Only a chosen few have the ability to fight their evil, and Jimmy believes Liz is among them. Now, with her senses heightened, new feelings are rising within Liz—ones that re-ignite her dangerous attraction to Jimmy. But Jimmy has a secret that will rock Liz to her core…and put the survival of the human race in peril.

Sapphyria's Review:

Elizabeth "Liz" Phoenix is a psychic that works with local law enforcement. A child of the foster care sysem, Liz still takes special care in visiting her foster mom, Ruthie, long after she becomes an adult. After awakening in a hospital bed, Liz learns that Ruthie was murdered, Liz was on scene, and her former foster brother-turned-former lover, Jimmy, is the only suspect. Liz's only memory of the attack comes in brutal nightmares and the occasional message from Ruthie.

Liz learns the hard way that not all about her life was or is simple. This discovery reunites Liz with Jimmy, as he tries to give her a crash course into who and what she really is and the role she is now in since Ruthie was killed. Liz is now the main "seer" - the one destined to save the world from Nephilim and other baddies. Heaven help us. She ends up at the location of a skinwalker, one that she was sent to for training when she was a teenager. His ways of introducing her to the powers locked inside are less than upstanding but they do what they need to do. Be prepared for non-consensual sex (not exactly rape - but there's a fine line drawn in the sand).

Liz has the potential to be a very strong, kick-ass type of heroine. I can see it throughout Any Given Doomsday and have high hopes for the rest of the series. She does, however, seem to have "doormat" tattooed across her forehead. She's a pushover when it comes to men. Confrontations with the woman Jimmy cheated on Liz with show that particularly unattractive quality in her. She still can't get enough of Jimmy even knowing the type of "person" he is and that soft spot for him almost lands her in the morgue.

I will say that, overall, I enjoyed the novel. It was pretty fast paced and dove into some pretty serious issues. The world is in chaos and the supernatural bad guys are doing everything they can to destroy everyone. It's up to an unprepared heroine to swoop in and save the day with almost no knowledge of anything besides her psychic abilities. Liz was left completely in the dark by those around her, including loved ones. I'd say that she deserves a little bit of slack.

There is plenty of action and suspense for those who go into an urban fantasy novel with those expectations. It is NOT a romantic story by any stretch of the imagination. Yes, there is sex - yes, some of it even relates to the plot. No, there isn't a distinct love story. It is an action-packed, fast paced novel about an impending apocalypse and how an uniformed woman of questionable heritage is going to take the reigns and save the day.

*** Review copy was won in a contest that was presented by the author, Lori Handeland.

I have Book 2 waiting on my bookshelf. I'll be continuing the adventures of Liz Phoenix soon.
