Book Blitz & #Giveaway: Ursa Unearthed (Scourge Survivor Series, Book 2) by J.L. Madore

About Ursa Unearthed:

Mika’s life has never been normal, but it’s hers.

After being told by the Great Spirit to stand up for the Earth Mother’s children and “save the great species from extinction,” she buries herself in an investigative journalism career hunting down poachers and exposing illegal trade in wildlife exotics. A survivor by nature, she would rather fight injustice than maneuver the hassles and heartache of relationships anyway.

When danger suddenly finds her unprepared, Mika’s perception of her life is shattered and she is hurled into a realm of magic and murder she does not understand. Seduced by Bruin, the powerful and sexy warrior who saves her life, Mika is catapulted into a world where Were-creatures and Scourge assassins threaten not only her life but her heart as well.

With the boundary between worlds crumbling, Mika realizes that her destiny to save the great species will draw her deeper into a reality more terrifying to her than anything she has faced before.

Trusting in love.

Ambar Lenn – Fate's Journey

Alone in the dark, Aust sat at the bottom of the grand staircase of Jade's manse, staring at the cryptic words mounted on the foyer wall. Translated by the Centaur, Chiron of Deleran, the Queen Oracles' prophesy hung opposite the double entrance doors. Aust's Elven brothers and warrior friends boasted thoughts and theories as to its meaning, but theories they remained. And on nights when reverie evaded him—which occurred more oft than not—he sat within the silent stone walls of Jade's new home and tried to glean the prophesy's meaning:

Journey of Fate, two realms to purge

Weapons drawn against the Scourge

Blaze of passion,

Trust unearthed,

Cleansing of past,

Spirit rebirthed,

Fate or free-will, which to choose?

With love to gain and life to lose.

Darkness hides in familiar form

A brother's betrayal, a sister's storm

Empower lost souls or evil shall reign

Noble the child of argenteous mane

Journey of Fate—the first line referred to their Ambar Lenn, everyone agreed on that point. Four fortnights past, the inception of his, Galan's and Thamior's journey to manhood had triggered unforeseen events. On that night—the night the exile of his people was lifted—the three of them had set off from the Highborne village to find their path.

Aust had yet to find anything . . . save grief.

His Eda had been slain, his Naneth left heart-weary, and his people so offended by his goddess-given affinity to communicate with his animal brothers and sisters, they cast him out.

Galan fared well enough, and for at least that much, he rejoiced. Jade was a remarkable female, and to have Recognized with his mate . . . there was no greater blessing. Together, partners in life and purpose, the two now served Castian as Protectors of the Realm of the Fair.

Thamior's journey? Well . . . Tham remained Tham e'ermore. Aust marveled at the strength of spirit the male possessed, his love and wonder of all things, the simple joy he found in living free within the Realm of the Fair. Tham had yet to make any progress in his journey, yet paid it no mind.

Weapons drawn against the Scourge—Aust was more than ready to take up arms against the enemy of the realm. He yearned to prove his value, burned to avenge his dead. There were moments, the fury boiled so white-hot in his blood, he almost drowned in the lure of vengeance and pain. He quelled those impulses as best he could.

For the choices made to navigate the journey of the Ambar Lenn would determine if he could ever be thought of as a male of worth. And so he pushed back the anguish and the anger and waited . . . .

Sapphyria's Review:

For Alexander Drake, Kiara Fredericks is truly the one who got away. Breaking up with her in college was definitely a huge mistake. One that he wants to correct and when Alex finds that she's back in Port Calypso, he makes his move.

Kiara is still affected by her college boyfriend-turned-dump without a reason-ex, Alex Drake. Wouldn't you know that he would have to turn up in the pub while she's waiting for her blind date to show.  When Kiara discovers the treachery that brought her to the pub, she is furious.

What evolves is a rekindling of the desire between both Kiara and Alex that has been slow burning for years.  The attraction is undeniable and the chemistry is amazing and undeniable.  Passionate Persuasion is truly a story about the one who got away - but Alex has figured out a way to try to win back Kiara.

If you're looking for a quick romance to fill an afternoon, this novella is the one.  Short, sweet, and to the point you'll spend your time reading about the main characters, Kiara and Alex, not a lot of filler or fluff.  The back story is there in a reasonable amount so the reader isn't guessing what happened that leads the characters to this point in the the present.

Sapphyria's Review:

Fit to be Dead takes place in San Antonio, Texas in 1997.  Executive banker, Agatha Mundeen, quit her job in Chicago and moved to Texas, behind one of her dearest friends, Detective Sam Vanderhoven.  He was married to a very good friend of Aggie's, Katie, but unfortunately, Katie and their adopted daughter were killed.  Aggie has developed an attraction to Sam that has gradually grown over time.  She enrolled in grad school and is also the columnist behind "Stay Young with Aggie."  Aggie decides that it's time to practice what she preaches and checks out the local fitness center, Fit & Firm Health Club.

Shortly after walking through the door - she's not even a member yet - she finds a young woman, named Holly, face down in the pool.  After extracting her and calling for help, Aggie comes to the conclusion that the accident may not have been an accident at all.  Her suspicions are confirmed when unusual and highly dangerous events keep happening at the Club.

Aggie is determined to help figure out why Holly, and now herself, are being targeted.  Aggie decides to start by doing some undercover investigations involving the Club regulars.  Her curiosity raises some eyebrows and  instead of being focused solely on Holly, who survived the pool incident, Aggie may also be a target now - for reasons unknown.  Aggie had just met Holly and the only thing she really knew about her was that she'd recently given a baby up for adoption.

Holly's secret baby isn't the only revelation.  As Aggie investigates, she ends of finding out a lot about the male patrons she's spying on and unearthing some secrets that apparently aren't suppose to be known.  After Holly is killed in a hit-and-run in the Club parking lot, the actions toward Aggie intensify.

Fit to Be is a humorous cozy mystery that takes the reader all over the place.  There are different threads to the craziness that don't seem to be connected and then all of a sudden something happens or is said and everything falls into place.  I enjoyed the plot and character development; the world building was done well.  We were given the important back story information on the main characters in just the right dosage - not too much, not too little.  We also learn that Aggie harbors a secret that she's held tight for several years.  A secret that could destroy the relationship that Aggie has with Sam.  A secret that is expertly woven in with the rest of the tale.

Aggie is 30+ and is not physically fit.  Her humorous attempts to use the different machines in the Club had me laughing out loud.  I'm also 30+ (not 40 yet but I'm closer to 40 than I am to 30) and while I'm thin, I'm not physically fit.  My husband and I purchased gym memberships at the beginning of 2014.  I hadn't a clue how to use anything - not even the treadmill.  I almost feel like the scene where Pete shows Aggie how to use the items in the weight room mirrors my husband trying to show me how to use the machines and such in our gym for the first time.  I love that I can relate to Aggie on that level.

I enjoyed Fit to be Dead.  It's a quick and easy read that keeps the reader engaged from for the first page.  There is humor, sadness, suspense, and tragedy - a little something for everyone who loves a good cozy mystery.

About the Author:

I’ve been writing since age seven: poems back and forth with my mom. I had a real poem published in the Library Journal, Pegasus, at age fifteen. At eighteen, I wanted to study journalism and English literature, but friends who chose that college route were making minimum wage or selling lingerie. Being practical, I earned a business degree. After marriage and two children, I decided I HAD to study literature and write. I wrote non-fiction articles, a biography, and a suspense novel in 2004. That’s when whimsical Aggie Mundeen cut through the suspense, popped into my head and demanded her own series. The Aggie Mundeen mystery capers were born. Aggie must have been right: FIT TO BE DEAD is a LEFTY FINALIST 2013 for best humorous mystery, nominated by Left Coast Crime.

Book Blast: The Watcher by Lisa Voisin #Giveaway

Genre: Paranormal Romance

About The Watcher:

Millennia ago, he fell from heaven for her. Can he face her without falling again?

Fascinated with ancient civilizations, seventeen-year-old Mia Crawford dreams of becoming an archaeologist. She also dreams of wings--soft and silent like snow--and somebody trying to steal them.

When a horrible creature appears out of thin air and attacks her, she knows Michael Fontaine is involved. Secretive and aloof, Michael evokes feelings in Mia that she doesn't understand. Images of another time and place haunt her. She recognizes them--but not from any textbook.

In search of the truth, Mia discovers a past life of forbidden love, jealousy and revenge that tore an angel from Heaven and sent her to an early grave. Now that her soul has returned, does she have a chance at loving that angel again? Or will an age-old nemesis destroy them both?

Ancient history is only the beginning.

Read an Excerpt:

Michael leaned against a nearby rock, still watching me. With the orange-cast light from the street lamp playing off his skin, shadowing the muscles of his shoulders and arms, and the flickering of golden light his halo cast around him, he looked positively heroic, like a statue of an ancient god.

“Where to now?” I asked, approaching him.

The wind had swept his hair into a tangle of curls splayed in every direction, forming a dark, shadowy crown of their own. I reached over to smooth it, as if doing so was the most natural thing in the world, and he brushed his hand up my spine. Even through my jacket, a burning heat coursed through me. Touching the back of my head, he found my braid and pulled it out. He twisted it between his fingers, examining it, then looked up at me, his gaze open, unguarded, his pupils as wide and black as the night sky. A flush warmed the back of my neck and I stood there mesmerized by him, unable to look away.

Arcing his other arm around me, he pulled me toward him and whispered, “I shouldn’t,” against the side of my face, as though it were a confession. Then, his lips cool and salty from the sea air, he kissed me with such tenderness it made my chest ache.

But I didn’t need tenderness. I needed him. Since the last time we’d kissed, I’d been so careful around him, trying not to cross the invisible line that would either damn him or scare him away. I couldn’t be careful anymore. Gripping the front of his shirt, I pulled him closer, and he locked his arms around me like I’d always wanted him to, like maybe he’d never let me go. Sitting on the rock, he gathered me into him, sliding me onto his lap. My thighs straddled his hips and he let out the softest of moans, his lips grazing my throat, the side of my neck, the line of my jaw, before returning to mine.

With a sharp inhale, he tensed and stopped kissing me. His eyes flashed a warning look—full of fear, as though he’d gone somewhere fathomless inside himself that he’d sworn he’d never go. Standing, he guided me off his lap. When he spoke, his voice took on a deep timbre.

“We’re not alone.”

Jackson clutched the stone wall of his chamber and gasped for air. What had just happened? He had returned to Cymmera, of that he was certain, but how? He hadn’t accessed the gateway. At least he didn’t remember opening it. A vision of her assailed him, beat at him, reminded him that he’d failed. Oh, man. He was in trouble. He pushed away from the wall. Images of his target taunted him. He shoved a chair aside and tore through the pictures scattered across the table in a desperate search for salvation. There. He pulled the shot from the mess but found only condemnation. The long blond hair flowing behind her in the snapshot had not been visible to him, but there was no mistaking the deep blue of her eyes. The pounding of a fist against the heavy wood door released him from whatever spell she’d cast.

“Jackson.”

Another loud thud punctuated his name. He struggled to get his bearings, tried to slow the racing of his heart.

“Yeah, one minute.”

“Now. Your father wants to see you, immediately.”

Kai, his father’s most trusted warrior. He was in more trouble than he’d originally thought. Was it possible the king would sentence him to death for ignoring a direct order? Surely not without offering him a fair trial, or at least granting him the opportunity to explain. But what could he say? What explanation could there be for failing to deliver the girl? None.

“I won’t knock again.”

The warrior would soon break down the door and drag him before the throne. He crumpled the offending photo, the evidence of his disgrace, into a ball. Instead of tossing it in the trash as he’d intended, he shoved it into the small leather satchel he wore at his waist. With a deep breath, he released the latch and pulled open the door.

“Come.”

Kai turned his back on him and strode purposefully down the corridor, their footfalls echoing through the silence of accusation. The thought of escape taunted him, but he would never make it out of the castle. He had only recently completed his warrior training under Kai’s watch and would be no match for the seasoned soldier. Besides, Kai was a stickler for the rules. If he tried to run, the warrior would surely take him down, protégé or not.

I pressed my palms against my eyes and let out a deep sigh. I just had to trust everything would work out. Everything would fall into place and I’d still be able to go to school and finish what I started at Art School. My mother reminded me that this could be a chance for me to finally make friends. It could be a new start to my life. The only thing she didn’t know was that I had made a friend; a strange friend, but none-the-less, a friend. Was I really calling him my friend? He was probably much less than a friend, and more of a stalker. He was also someone that I felt connected to – someone that I wanted to see again before I left for Greece. Did he know my family’s plan? I felt a shiver run down my spine, and it felt like a finger was tracing my neck.

I stood up, glancing at my bed where I'd been sitting. I was expecting to suddenly see him; his long hair that touched his shoulders, and his pale skin that was cold. It almost reminded me of when skin was submerged in water for too long. The pale yet soft quality skin developed the longer it remained under the waters. He was as flawless as a reflection seen in the clearest waters, and yet, there was something about him that caused him to be blemished. It was beyond his eyes or features, but in his soul. It was hidden in the darkest part of his eyes, in the crook of the corner of his lips; a secret that he seemed to want me to guess -- to know.

I opened the small suitcase full of my paint supplies and pulled out a few colors and a few brushes, along with a white sheet of paper that was lying on my now empty desk. Painting always made me feel better, and I hoped this last time, it would have the same effect on me. This would be the last painting on my beach. I decided that I wanted to get comfortable, and out of my dusty clothes from cleaning and packing. I put my paints on my desk and walked to my dresser in the corner of my room. I pulled out clothes that I was willing to leave behind; a pair of sweats that were cut at the knees, and an extra-large shirt that had droplets of black and blue paint all over it. I pulled my hair up in a ponytail, and slipped on a pair of my old sneakers that also, weren’t being packed. I looked like a painter. The same way Maggie had displayed ‘painter’ with her overalls.

I smiled a small smile at the thought of her I wondered what she was doing now that she was home. I could imagine Maggie with some of her friends from home; the faceless girls created in my mind, as they dove head first into crystal clear pools. Beach parties planned, while eating pizza and watching the sunsets. I also knew Maggie would be there with her camera, capturing pictures for later to paint. Even though Maggie and I weren't the closest of friends, I knew I'd miss her. A piece of something familiar I'd never have again.

I grabbed my pile of paints, brushes and paper, and went down the stairs to the kitchen. It was dimly lit by the sun streaming in from the windows. There were hardly any decorations on the walls anymore, and only my mom’s good dishes were in the open cabinet. She figured plastic plates were the best to pack and shipped right away, while the china would be boxed carefully later and sent in more secure circumstances. A cruel part of me hoped a plate would get chipped on the way to Greece. My painting of Demeter and Persephone was still on the wall. I had insisted to leave it behind. It still sent chills throughout my body. It was more a reminder of what he promised than any other painting I created. I stood there for a moment, looking at my brush strokes of the two women and the blurred shadow in the forest. The same shadow I wanted to see. I closed my eyes, taking in a deep breath of air. The ocean breeze coming from the open kitchen window filled my lungs. I was going to miss this place so much. I opened my eyes, and slowly moved away from the painting. I wanted to escape to my ocean and spend as much time as I could. When I opened the back door to our porch, I saw that it was covered with a light dusting of sand. I pressed my toes into the rough grains, enjoying the feeling against my skin. There was something about sand and the beach that brought calmness to me.

I was glad when the walkway finally became sand and beach, and there was nothing solid underneath my feet. There was nothing ahead but the water and me. I set my collection of art supplies on the dry cement and pushed myself out toward the water. I loved the feeling of the ocean ebb over my feet. It brought back memories of my childhood. My father would take me out back to our ocean and build me sand temples instead of castles, and mermaid tails. He’d tell me the stories about the Gods that littered our house as we’d burry our feet in the moist sand where the water rushed over us. There were many times that my father would have to hold onto me just so that I wouldn’t be washed away with the water. My mother would stand at the back door and watch. She was always watching, and he always played with me. He was my entertainer, and my mother was my keeper. I could see the picture of my father and I when I was seven. He had me on his shoulders and my feet were dripping with sand. I had since lost the photo, but had always wanted to paint my version of it. It was my favorite memory of the two of us.

I heard a seagull cry out over the roar of the waves, and the wind tasted sweet and salty as I took in a deep breath. This is how I always wanted to remember my beach; warm and peaceful, perfect: mine. I couldn’t bring myself to turn around and grab my paints. I wanted to enjoy the beauty of it all without having to worry that I mixed the colors right, or added too much water on my brush. This sight was meant only for me. The world had created a painting for me to enjoy. I found a dry spot of sand and sat down, digging two holes with my toes for my feet to rest in.

The more I dug, the more I thought, and the more I thought, the angrier I became. I had lived here my entire life. Even when I went away to Art School, I still had the promise of home waiting for me only an hour away. Home would be in Greece now.

Anger pushed me from the ground. Anger pushed me to grab my paints from the porch and scorch my paper with flashes of reds and yellows and angry orange. The dark purples felt like bruises that would never leave my body. They would be engrained into my skin. Even the purple paint that was smeared on my thumb. Anger pushed me to cover the white paper until there was nothing but a mess of paint and water. Anger pushed me to tear apart the paper and dash it over the ocean foam. The pleasure and pain emerged as the waves tore and disintegrated the paper into nothing.

I felt my stomach twist and grumble, and I knew I was hungry. With a soft sigh, I turned around; taking only one more glance at the deep blue waves and wished for a moment that I had been born a fish. The ocean could have been my home. I wouldn’t ever have to say goodbye to it. With that thought, I walked back toward the porch, watching my feet kick the sand with each step. I knew I’d have to ride my bike into town if I wanted to get something to eat or I could hope that there was something in the fridge. Maybe she had left something in there, thinking of me. It was cooler in the house than before I had gone out to the ocean. My feet were leaving a trail of sand on the kitchen floor and I knew that if I didn’t clean it up, my mother would have a fit. I grabbed one of the dishrags lying by the sink. Getting it wet, I tried to wipe away as much sand as I could. I bent over, wiping away the sand on the bottoms of my feet. I tossed the rag on the counter and walked toward the fridge, expecting to find it completely empty. The fridge’s air felt good against my warm skin as I glanced around the empty shelves. There was only a large lonely, pomegranate on the top shelf. It was a deep, blood red, and it made my mouth water.
