Review: Love Bites (A Sugar City Novella, #1) by Ophelia London

About Love Bites:

Falling in love is like swimming with sharks…

Sharona Blaire is only in Australia for a business audit, but she’s determined to make the most of her one free night. So when she spills her drink on a handsome stranger and they end up flirting, she does something completely out of character—she kisses him. But the prospect of taking it further totally freaks her out…almost as much as discovering the next morning that the man she’s auditing is the sexy, tanned stranger she left with zero explanation.

An audit during his crew’s most important expedition yet is a complication marine biologist Jeff Cruz doesn't need—especially when the auditor is the gorgeous, fascinating woman from the night before. Out at sea with nowhere to run, he’s forced to admit Sharona draws him in like a shark to blood. But Jeff's one passion is his job, and nothing—not even love—will get its hooks in him...

Sapphyria's Review:

There's no easy to put this but...Sharona Blaire is a clutz.  On a trip to Australia she not only spilled her drink on someone in the airplane, but also someone in the hotel bar the same night she arrives.  What are the chances that both drinks are spilled on the same person?  Pretty darn good, actually.  Intrigued by the handsome, good-humored man, and thinking she'd never see him again anyway, Sharona steps outside her comfort zone and propositions him....then leaves him standing alone by the elevator after she loses her nerve.

Jeff Cruz is about to head out to the middle of the ocean to work on his most important project and does NOT need to be followed around by an auditor commissioned by the University of Miami.  He knows he's spending their money wisely and anything additional to the budget he's taking care of himself.  When it turns out the auditor is none other than the sexy tease from the night before, he can't decide if that makes things better or worse.

Love Bites is a cute, romantic read that is quick and leaves the reader satisfied.  The chemistry between Sharona and Jeff is undeniable and believable.  There are misunderstandings, feet placed in mouths, and other unfortunate goings-on but that gives the story charm and allows the story to feel more like reality than fantasy.  I was able to read the novella in one sitting, which is a good thing, because I really didn't want to have to put it down.  I recommend this to anyone who loves a cute, quick, romantic story that won't take too long to devour.

About the Author:

Edie Hart was born in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, where she now resides with her husband, two children, dog, and three cats. After spending her childhood making up stories in her head, she finally decided to put them on paper. What came of it was her first novella, One Bad Day. Edie is a die-hard romantic and believes that everyone deserves to be loved unconditionally--both in print and real life.

Edie also admits that "Edie Hart" is a pen name and an alter ego to an otherwise boring wife and mother. Edie is 20 pounds lighter, loves to skydive, travels to foreign places, and is a total sex kitten as compared to the uninteresting other half who is none of those things.

In reality the counterpart of Edie is a lackluster 40-something-year-old, whose main goal is to keep The Big One (The Boy) from torturing The Little One (The Girl). This week he hit her in the head with a 12-pack of Juicy Juice. Last week he left ravioli handprints on the back of her white T-shirt. The week before that he told her she was adopted and she believed him.

Now the one he covets is the one he needs to let go—her survival depends on it. But his stubborn human has set out to prove him wrong in a battle for love and her own life.

Sometimes you have to unleash the beast…

Excerpt:

John’s decision to come to the turnpike station first had Cole’s fangs edging out. “We should go to the scene, to confirm—” He couldn’t finish the thought. Without his blood inside Mia, he couldn’t be sure, and his entire body was conflicted with doubt. His jaw tightened, and the tip of his fangs poked at the inside of his lip. Removing his clip from his belt, he flicked his thumb underneath the first bullet and ejected it from the clip into his palm. He closed his eyes as the silver burned its shape into his flesh and eased the glow he felt creeping into his eyes. Taking a calming breath, he slid the bullet into his pocket and reattached the clip to his belt.

“Stay calm,” John said, as they walked through the doors to the turnpike substation. Cole responded in a low growl that put John on alert, making his jaw muscle tick.

A young man leaning back in his chair with his feet propped on the table looked up from a set of monitors. “Can I help you?”

“Do you get pictures from the road cameras?” John asked.

“Naw, that’s illegal. The whole “Big Brother” argument. We only monitor them. We get an alert from the radar units on the other poles when a vehicle’s speed registers too low or high and then we check the monitors for trouble.” He smacked his gum with an open mouth chew and turned his attention to Cole as he walked behind the counter. “Sir, you can’t come back here,” he said.

“Are these today’s turnpike tickets?” Cole asked, his jaw set in a tight line.

“You can’t just come back here…”

“Answer the question.”

“I-I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” The young man stammered as he reached toward the phone. Cole’s hand covered his, quickly replacing the phone in its cradle.

“We’re going to have a problem if you don’t answer my question,” Cole said, filling in the space between them. He leveled an assertive gaze at the man.

“Barnett. Back off,” John commanded.

“You-you need some type of warrant or authority to come back here.”

Cole ignored the man and grabbed the tin box from the counter. Pulling out a stack of tickets, he held them to his nose. With a frustrated growl, he threw the stack down and grabbed more from the box. With each stack, he grew more agitated. Picking up the fifth stack, he paused as a familiar scent reached his nose. He breathed deeper and tore through the tickets to pull out the one with Mia’s aroma. It was faint, but it was her scent.

“I need the license plate and the photo of the driver this came from.” Cole held out the ticket to man.

“I can’t do that. I need permission and—”

“Now!”

“Sir, you don’t have the authority…”

Cole snatched his badge from his belt and slammed it on the table in front of the man. “How’s this? No?” Arching a brow at the man’s hesitation his gun followed, slamming down with the same force as the badge. “How about this?”

The man locked into Cole’s deadly gaze. When his eyes widened, Cole knew it was from the glow that had started to appear from behind his irises.

“Still not enough authority for you? How about this!” Cole’s fangs jetted out like a switchblade.

“Holy shit! What kind of cops are you?”

Top 10 Favorite Paranormal Places Investigated by Bob Freeman & Nightstalkers of Indiana & Book Spotlight ~ Shadows Over Somerset (A Cairnwood Manor Novel)

Virtual Tour Author:
Bob Freeman Featured Book:
Shadows Over Somerset
BobFreemanTourBadge

I'm super excited to have Bob Freeman on the blog today.  He's the founder of Nightstalkers of Indiana paranormal investigators and I've asked him to list his Top Ten Favorite Paranormal Places.

Top 10 Favorite Paranormal Places
Investigated by Bob Freeman & Nightstalkers of Indiana

I formed Nightstalkers of Indiana in 1983. In the years since, I have investigated all over the US, and have made excursions into Mexico, Canada, and even Scotland. But Indiana is my home and it's where I have done my most thorough research. So, with that in mind, I have decided to limit this list to those places I discovered in my own backyard, because, to be frank, they have been more personal.

10. "Hobbitland"

In mid-December, 1812, Lt. Col. John Campbell and a Calvary of 600 soldiers attacked several Miami Indian villages along the Mississinewa River. It was a bloody affair. Now the site of a popular reenactment, in my day it was where young people went to party and hook-up. These young people called the area "Hobbitland" because of the persistent legend of little "quasit-like" creatures that made the area they're home.

9. Elwood Opera House

Built in 1887, the majestic Elwood Opera House was a popular venue for the biggest performers of the era. It also housed a Masonic Lodge. Having investigated there on several occasions, I've been lucky enough to capture numerous EVPs, to have been personally touched by unseen forces and witnessed others experience the same, to have seen doors open and close, with force, as if by their own accord, and experienced a wealth of other sensory sensations.

8. "Devil House"

Led to an abandoned farm house in the middle of nowhere by a concerned conservation officer, I was stunned to find an upstairs room in this derelict house to be covered in esoteric graffiti by a steady and talented hand. Here were intricate spell circles and exotic sigils and runes covering every bit of conceivable space. There were also the remnants of candles and the remains from some form of animal sacrifice. The air was charged with energy and some disturbing EVPs were collected. The house was soon after torn down by its owner.

7. Seven Pillars

A sacred site to the Miami Indians, these seven columns, carved into the limestone by the rise and fall of the Mississinewa River, is said to be home to preternatural beings who live between this world and the next, with the natural formations of the Pillars being a gateway between these worlds. I consider it the epicenter to all the weird and wonderful paranormal phenomena in northern Indiana and home to unseen forces, sentient apparitions, and residual manifestations.

6. "Murder House of Liston Glen"

A favorite haunt of mine until it was torn down by its owners, the legend goes something like this: “Years ago a family lived here, but one Halloween night something terrible happened. The father woke up and went outside and grabbed his axe and proceeded to chop his wife and two sons up into little pieces and then he burnt them in the fireplace in the basement. After he had let the fire consume their bodies, the man climbed the steps to the upstairs balcony and hung himself. His spirit has remained trapped in this house ever since.”

5. "The Shadows"

Along the Mississinewa River, nestled in the woods not far from Five Mile Bridge, are two stone chairs on either side of a stone throne that face a firepit. Isolated, long abandoned, here there be shadow figures that watch from the woods and the audible whispers of unseen spirits. On one occasion, I discovered pennies from the early 1900s on the ground, stamped with the Masonic trowel on one side and the square and compass on the other.

4. Little Pipe Creek Cemetery

As a young boy of 8, I used to sneak out of my parent's trailer and spend long hours in this little cemetery. See, it had a wild reputation: a gate that opened on its own to allow ladies to pass, or to strike out at young gentlemen, disembodied voices, and phantom growls, or so the legends say. It has the distinction of being the site where I witnessed my first apparition.

3. "The House That Time Forgot"

There was (is?) a house set far back in the woods, no visible road back to it, not far from the town of Somerset, a mere stone's throw from a place we called "The Cliffs". The house was abandoned, but curiously, the people left everything behind... furniture, clothes, food, an attic full of this and that. On the coffee table was an open newspaper from 1966, the year I was born and the year the Mississinewa Dam was constructed. It was here, watching anxiously from the attic stair, that I experienced my second apparition, a pale mist, accompanied by the thuds of footsteps, traversing the first floor.

2. Beacon Lodge

I've promised the owners not to disclose the location of this site, easily the most haunted place I've ever had the pleasure to hunt. An old gentleman's lodge built in the mid-1800s, this place has given up a veritable treasure trove of evidence over the years: Countless EVPs, Disembodied Voices, Shadow Figures, Full Bodied Apparitions, Physical Attacks, and more. I have shared it with dozens of other investigators and it has never failed to leave an impression.

1. Goose Creek

The Nightstalkers of Indiana were born on October 22, 1983 at a place called Goose Creek.

What do I remember most from that night? An inverted pentagram framing the full moon overhead. The roadway covered with dead fish. The fumbling of the Invocation. The circle of protection being inadvertently broken (way to go, Andy). A frightened teenage girl whispering, “Oh God…” and a sinister reply —”Your god can’t help you now!” And screams. Lots of screams.

More than thirty years later and that evening is still just as fresh in my mind as it was the day after. It was a defining moment. I went from dabbling in the paranormal to becoming a serious student, practitioner, and investigator of unseen forces and all those many things that go bump in the night.

It’s been a long road filled with countless thrills and chills along the way, but that road always leads back to Goose Creek, in the heart of the Mississinewa Reservoir, back to where it all began, on a cold, autumn night, with a blood moon piercing the darkness and the haunting memory of what happened there.

I would love to thank Bob for being here today and to Stephen at Tomorrow Comes Media for the introduction to Bob, his novel, and his paranormal investigations.

About All Who Are Lost:

One man.
Too many betrayals.
Three women.
One last chance
.

On a cold winter day, a woman calls a number halfway across the world.

A man answers.

After fourteen years, Laura St. Bride hears the voice she has never forgotten, the voice she will remember with her last breath…

What do you do
when the love of your life
is the last person you should love?

A great family estate in Virginia.

Three sisters growing up in the shadow of their father’s obsessive drive to recapture his lost muse, the woman he threw into the cold Irish sea.

The scion of an old family, falling in love with the wrong sister, blind to the ice at her core.

A woman haunted by a moment of blood and violence, when she reached out and took a man who didn’t belong to her.

A man living a life of regret and sacrifice, given a second chance to claim the woman he should have loved all along.

Excerpt from All Who Are Lost:

I know you’re out there somewhere....

She stared out across a crowded London square, unknowing, unseeing, the serenity of her face captured in the flat surface of the theatrical poster. The light noon rain ran down in small diagonal rivers across her, crinkling the smooth plain of her forehead and the gentle cut of her jaw. She wept, large, abandoned tears that warred with the lovely turn of her mouth.

The Great Cat, they called her.

Many of those who had come to Leicester Square, hunting for half-price theater tickets, gravitated to her, beckoned by her eyes, lured on by the legend of mist and mystery that surrounded her. A few balked at the price of “An Intimate Evening with Cat Courtney.” Others realized to their sorrow that they had conflicting tickets, meals planned with in-laws, flights to catch. Three nights only, announced the poster, and this, unfortunately, was the last night.

She smiled out at them all, oblivious to their concerns, uncaring of the rain wetting her face.

The American tourist who came walking into the square, his daughter by his side, did not notice her at first. The rain had stopped for a few minutes, and other matters engaged him: folding up a handy umbrella, glancing at his watch, reading a guide book over his daughter’s shoulder. For one minute longer, he remained merely a tourist on a much-needed vacation. For one minute longer, the Great Cat never crossed his mind.

But the Great Cat could wait, and for this man she would wait forever.

She had left him a decade before, both of them reeling from the blood of their folly, in a deserted cottage on a desolate shore on the other side of the world. Had she eyes to see, she would know him instantly.

Eventually, respite ended. Eventually, Richard Ashmore lifted his head, his eyes scanning across the theatrical posters, in search of an evening’s entertainment suitable for a young girl. The titles made little impression – Les Miserables, The Graduate, Noises Off – until he saw her and everything around her blurred into oblivion.

He knew her too, instantly.

Laura.

His worst mistake.

~~

“Dad?” Julie touched her hand to his. “Do you think we can get tickets?”

“We can try.” Richard closed his fingers around hers, a talisman to ward memory off. “Don’t get your hopes up, Julie. Her concerts usually sell out.”

“Let’s ask over there,” suggested his daughter, pointing across the square to the ticket kiosk. “Maybe someone bought tickets and can’t go. Maybe someone dropped their tickets, and someone turned them in. Maybe —”

“Maybe, maybe, maybe,” he teased, but already he was allowing her to drag him across the stones towards the waiting queue.

They took their places in line. Julie was glowing with excitement, the happiest Richard had seen her since the morning before her grandparents had died. He was less optimistic. Others ahead of them had requested tickets, and the possibility of stray tickets lessened as they moved up the line. He sought to cushion her against disappointment by letting her plan the afternoon. They were only a couple of blocks from the National Gallery, or would she prefer to hop the tube for Harrods?

“Harrods,” said Julie immediately. “And tea, Dad.” She leaned in against him to look at his guidebook. “I have my birthday money from Lucy. I want to get something to wear to the concert.”

“Keep your money, kitten.” He wished that they had never seen the poster. Selfish, yes, but if meeting her eyes in a poster disturbed him, how would he feel to see her again, even in the black anonymity of an audience? Better not to know, better to go back to an occasional evening of listening to her songs in the dark and trying to make some sense of what had happened.

And Julie had endured enough recently.

They were second in line now, behind a couple attempting to get tickets to the latest Andrew Lloyd Webber. Good luck, thought Richard, who had tried for three months. They bought him a few minutes of reprieve while they settled for a sex comedy instead.

“Two for Cat Courtney,” he said, and if the gods had been with him, just this once, he would have been told in that inimitable British way, Sorry, sir, but that show has just sold out....

“Yes, a few tickets have been turned in,” and his fate was sealed. He and Julie looked at the seating chart. She sparkled as she so seldom did, and as he paid for the tickets he thought that he would bear any pain, any guilt, to see that look on her face.

“Those are good seats,” said the man behind him, another American from the sound of him. “I’ve seen her before, and she’s worth twice the price.”

Julie forgot her usual shyness with strangers. “I can’t wait! I’ve wanted to see her for so long —”

A woman with a Southern accent said kindly, “You know, darlin’, you’re just the picture of her.”

“Thank you,” said Julie. “I’m glad I am. She’s my aunt.”

And Richard Ashmore looked at the tickets and realized, with a shock, that it was June 9, and he had been married for seventeen years.

~~

In his life, Richard Ashmore had made three mistakes with women. Not that three was so unusual; no man reached his thirties without suffering the particular pain that women could inflict and without inflicting it in return. He was luckier than most men, perhaps, for he had erred early and grievously, and caution had been driven into him like a bullet. He carried with him permanent reminders of his follies: a marriage gone disastrously wrong, the painful conscience that he had not always been the upright man his daughter loved, a shoulder that ached in cold weather.

Ah, Diana, unattainable once attained, a monumental mistake made in all the first flush of adolescent desire and pride. Too young to marry, too blindly in love to recognize the ice behind her eyes, he had turned a deaf ear to his father’s warning that his princess was hollow at her core.

Francie, silver-quick smile and hungry eyes, and his own need for the warmth of a woman’s arms. The dangerous combination of a magnum of champagne on New Year’s Eve and three years of exile from his marriage bed had erupted into a springtime of madness. The gods had demanded their due: a marriage wrecked beyond salvage, a family foundered, two young women cast adrift.

And the third.... Oh, but even now, all these years later, he stood before her picture, and he still did not understand. She watched him from the poster, more animated in flat gray and white than he had ever known her. But he knew those eyes. He knew how they adored him, how they burned in fever and desire, how they haunted odd moments of the day and dark pockets of the night.

Diana. Francie. Laura the Cat.

He supposed he had a special weakness for shuttered eyes that invited a man in with promises implied and unkept, for wild autumn hair spread gloriously across a pillow, for tall, elegant figures and clear, sweet voices and beguiling, destructive ways. They all three had this and more in common, and why not? They were sisters, after all.

Dane is currently gearing up to embark on tour for his upcoming book.  When his agent requests a meeting and they are joined by another author, Holly Winters, and her agent, things just get weird - especially when both agents mysteriously disappear and Holly and Dane are forced into a rather awkward situation.

The "date" between Holly and Dane is a complete set-up; a publicity stunt by both agents.  When the press become involved, tides shift, threatening the careers of both Holly and Dane.  And still their agents aren't satisfied.  They up the ante - Dane and Holly are to act like a romantic couple - to boost blog ratings and book sales.

Will the awkward pairing destroy the reputations they worked hard to establish or humble the man who thought he knew everything there is to know about the dating scene?

Mr. Virile and the Girl Next Door is a very sweet, romantic novella but it also contains a couple spicy scenes.  The spice was written tastefully but are explicit.  I would recommend that only 18+ read about Mr. Virile and The Girl Next Door.

There is a lot packed into 60+ pages and I felt everything was executed correctly.  The tension throughout was thick and believable.  Both main characters are likable - even the "bachelor extraordinaire."

Content Warning:  This novella contains adult scenes.

About The Frost of Springtime:

To rescue her was to rescue his own soul.
On a cold Parisian night, Vicomte Aleksender de Lefèvre forges an everlasting bond with a broken girl during her darkest hour, rescuing her from a life of abuse and misery. Tormented by his own demons, he finds his first bit of solace in sheltering little Sofia Rose.

But when Aleksender is drawn away by the Franco-Prussian war, the seasons pass. And in that long year, Sofia matures into a stunning young woman—a dancer with an understanding of devotion and redemption far surpassing her age.

Alongside his closest friend, Aleksender returns home to find that “home” is gone, replaced by revolution, bloodshed, betrayal—and a love always out of reach. Scarred inside and out, he’s thrust into a world of sensuality and violence—a world in which all his hours have now grown dark, and where only Sofia might bring an end to the winter in his heart.

Inspired by the 1871 Paris Commune, The Frost of Springtime is a poignant tale of revolution, redemption, and the healing power of love.

The heat of their bodies mingled as one. With each breath, Aleksender drank in the sweet essence of his beloved ward. His mind swam with unorthodox visions and desires. He inclined his head, lost to the power of her nearness, entranced by everything that was Sofia.

“Alek, my Alek …”

Each word infused Aleksender with a delicious and undeniable warmth. Intoxicated by roses and wintertime, he found it difficult to speak, difficult to think. Breathless, he swallowed and met the haunting depths of her eyes.

“Please,” she dreamily murmured, “I want you to kiss me again…”

Title:  The Overlord's Heir
Author:  Michelle Howard
Genre: Scifi Romance

About The Overlord's Heir:

With his enemy defeated and order re-established, Vaan plans to enjoy his life with his Raasa mate. Mikayla’s upcoming birth makes his heart sing with joy.

Mikayla prepares for the birth of her first youngling with her Overlord mate. This should be a happy time but Vaan must return to Kaban and reassure his people that he yet lives.

There are still those not pleased at the turn of events with Thenl’s downfall and seek to destroy what the Overlord has built. Will Vaan and Mikayla finally be able to relax or will trouble continue to follow them?

Excerpt from The Overlord's Heir:
(Used by Sapphyria's Book Reviews with permission).

When Balal returned to the lower level, Vaan cornered him. “How is she?”

His Warlord hesitated and then answered. “Hurt.”

Kavan came up behind him. “She is not pleased you kept this from her.”

Vaan knew that and accepted his actions. “Mikayla would have worried needlessly. I fear carrying our youngling has her judgment absent.”

Kavan folded his arms over his bare chest. “You should confine her to her bed while you are gone.”

Vaan felt a grin tug at his lips. Kavan and Mikayla had come to a mutual agreement between them that neither would discuss with him but Kavan often argued that Mikayla should settle into her role as mate. “You would have her angrier at me before I leave, yes?”

His Warlord cracked a small smile. “It would make watching her easier for Balal and I.”

Vaan grunted. Nothing involving his mate was easy. “Mikayla is not a Kabanian woman. Best we all accept and remember this then move forward.” He faced Balal. Mikayla’s favorite among his Warlords. “You will not allow her to endanger herself.”

“As you command, Overlord.”

Balal’s agreement came instantly but Vaan had witnessed Mikayla work around the youth in the past. “Have Assa help you if necessary.” Assa and Mikayla grew up together. His mate maintained a close relationship with all of her people due to her parents going to the Hills while she was a youngling but she was closest to Assa, Sera and Vesa. The house servants would be sure to keep an eye on Mikayla.

Balal ran a hand through his dark shoulder length hair and shifted his weight. “Assa no longer gives me her confidence.”

Vaan raised a brow at this news but Kavan burst into laughter drawing stares their way. Balal’s cheeks stained red.

“What happened, Warlord?” The Raasa female seemed enamored of Balal and often spent time in his company.

Kavan’s laughter died to chuckles and answered Vaan for Balal. “She is not pleased with his bed play.”

Balal punched Kavan in the chest and stormed from the hall, anger in his steps. Vaan sighed. This he knew something about. Perhaps, he’d offer Balal a hint to ease his way.

Book Blitz: Someone Like You by Karen Rock

About Someone Like You:
You can't program love…or can you?

Kayleigh Renshaw has come up with the idea for a brilliant "compatibility app," a new kind of matchmaking software. All she needs is a programmer to help her bring the idea to market…and she knows exactly who she wants. But Niall Walsh—a code whiz and her former best friend—has been avoiding her since he returned from Afghanistan. In spite of their history, and some sparks that go beyond friendship, he's proving reluctant…. Is it her, or is something darker holding him back?

PRE-ORDER

Read an Excerpt of Someone Like You:

The cool air on her wet shoulders made her shiver, and Niall wrapped his towel around her. “Here. I don’t need it.”
She handed it back. “No, Niall. You don’t get it. I don’t want you to come to my rescue. I’m not looking for a knight in shining armor. If I were a princess, I’d save myself.”
Niall’s leg circled in the water, making a mini whirlpool. “So tell me what a non-princess needs,” he said at last.
“Someone who brings out the best in me, supports me, values my opinion and, most of all, is honest with me.”
“I’ll do that, Kay.” He looked sincere, and his insistent tone undid the wall she’d placed between them. “As much as I can. Let’s set up our base of operations in my apartment, and we’ll meet there tomorrow. I’ve got some things for us to go over, and nothing’s final until we both approve.” He pulled off her swim goggles, then trailed the backs of his fingers down the side of her face until they fell away.
Her breath hitched. That didn’t feel like a “friendly” touch. And it definitely crossed pro- fessional boundaries. So why did she want him to do it again? To let his hand linger so she could press her cheek into his palm.
“We’ll disagree at times. But I won’t let anyone, like Major Carlton, act like you don’t exist again.”
She shook her head, trying to get her thoughts back on track. “I didn’t think you’d noticed.”
He studied his wrinkled fingertips, then lifted his eyes to hers, their tortured depths doing something funny to her heart.
“I notice you, Kayleigh,” he said quietly, almost to himself. “More than I should.”

Excerpt from Chapter 4 of Variants:

He stood inside the entrance as the doors closed behind him. His gaze was drawn to a slim calf covered in black denim hanging over the arm of a wing back chair facing the desk. A black Converse shoe bounced up and down. Then a dark head with gray eyes peeked at him from around the edge of the chair. The girl’s near-black straight hair was cut at an angle where it touched the tip of her chin on one side of her heart shaped face and ended at mid ear on the other side.

He took a step forward, ready to reach for her. It was an instinctive reaction and one he had never done before. He held himself still.

His insides sang to the tune of another like him. Oh, yes, she is most definitely of Anathergian blood.

With reddened cheeks, she twisted away.

Marla reached her desk. Glancing from Auden to Leah, she gestured toward the girl. “Auden, please meet Leah.”

The girl gave a halfhearted wave at him from beyond the chair. Auden raised an eyebrow at Marla. The woman’s brow creased and she shook her head, her curls bobbing against her cheeks. “Leah, have manners, if you please.”

“I waved hello, didn’t I?” said a sulky voice from the seat.

Marla’s mouth went tight, and then she motioned for Auden to come forward. He approached the side of the desk to get a better view of the girl.

She was slight, but not too thin. Her long, shapely legs, emphasized by the tight jeans, seemed to go on for days. Her short-sleeved fitted black t-shirt had a drawing of a face with Xs for eyes. His gaze stopped at her pert breasts that stood from the shirt for a moment. When he realized where his stare had strayed, he brought his perusal higher. A pale, sateen neck gave way to a stubborn jaw line. Parted wine lips made his throat parched. Her straight nose was almost too big for her face, but it went well with her angled chin. A gunmetal glare shot sparks at him and she bounced her leg to an agitated tune. It was apparent she was not happy about her current situation. He could commiserate, but it didn’t mean he would give into her rancor.

Leah scrutinized the man who, according to Marla, had come to bring her to his people for training. He was someone Marla trusted and the training would help her grow. As if. Leah already had people to train her. Here, at Sanctuary. She didn’t need his people. And what could his people teach her she hadn’t already excelled at?

She tilted her head back and glared at him, giving him her best As if I care look. But, jeez, was he huge! Holy crap, he could probably take down a bull without using a horse or rope. His eyes were as dark as the deepest depths of the ocean and churned with as much life as those seas. She idly wondered what treasures were hidden there. When Leah studied his face, she thought of exotic Egyptian pharaohs. He wore a black, long-sleeved buttoned shirt made of a soft material that kissed his muscles like a lover. His jeans molded to his muscular thighs and extended over black boots.

His gaze gave her a once over so thorough she had to subdue the urge to squirm. Instead, she notched her chin higher. When he continued to scrutinize her, she said, “You can stop staring.”

Marla’s intake of breath sent a small pang of guilt through Leah’s chest, and she sent the woman a quick apologetic look. Glancing back at Auden, she noticed a slight lift at one corner of his mouth. She covered her own twitching smile and instead showed a sudden interest in the wood beams lining the ceiling.

“What have you told her?” His baritone timbre made Leah think of swimming in a serene lake with cool water surrounding her. It calmed her.

“I told her we have known each other for quite some time and I trust the training she will receive with you will be beyond reproach,” answered Marla.

Irritated, Leah let out a small harrumph. “I’m sitting right here. Please don’t talk about me as if I’m not right in front of you.”

“Oh,” he regarded her up and down, “do you wish to join the conversation?”

That’s it! After the morning she had, she wasn’t going to let this guy push her around. She stood, taking fast steps toward him. “Do I wish to join the conversation? You”—she pointed at him—“bet I do! Why am I going with you? What type of training can you give me”—she pointed a thumb at herself—“that I can’t learn here?” She gestured with her hands indicating the school. “What makes your people”—she poked her finger into his chest and became even more annoyed because he didn’t even flinch—“so much better than the people I have here?” She indicated the school again.

“Leah, this is unacceptable behavior,” interjected Marla, her voice high with angry disappointment.

Auden, who hadn’t moved a muscle during Leah’s tirade, spoke to Marla. “It’s fine, Marla. I can handle this.”

“Handle? Handle? Seriously?” Leah sputtered. “Do you think you’re just going to ʻhandle’ me?” She made quotation marks with her fingers.

“Right, then, I’ll leave you to it,” Marla said to Auden and headed toward the double doors.
