Office #Romance and the Characters in Richard H. Hardy's Novel ~ The Infinity Program ~ Guest Post, Excerpt, #Giveaway

I am so happy to have Richard H. Hardy back on Sapphyria's Book Reviews!

Please welcome Richard as he discusses with us his thoughts on office romances.

What are your thoughts on having an office romance?

How did you go about creating the tension and the attraction in Jon and Lettie's relationship?

Office Romances and The Infinity Program

The office romance has a special, built-in tension. When a couple has problems, they’re often carried directly into the work place. In The Infinity Program, Lettie’s decision to put the relationship on hold causes a lot of pain for Jon, especially when he has to work closely with her at the office. His unhappiness escalates when he thinks Lettie is interested in someone else at the office.

An office romance can put a couple into a fishbowl. Small spats or squabbles can become a sideshow for the rest of the staff. When I worked in IT, I witnessed a few such blow-ups. One of the programmers I worked with once said, “This is better than watching the soaps!”

Disagreements about office happenings can carry into a couple’s personal life. A romantic dinner for two might be marred by something that happened at work. Possible disagreements abound: “The boss did the right thing” — “No, the boss is a jerk.” “Sam just stands by the water cooler all day “ — “No, Sam works very hard.” “The new hire is kind of cute” — “The new hire has an undershot chin.” The list can go on and on!

I used several different approaches in The Infinity Program to heighten the tension between Jon and Lettie. Their respective status within the company is one example of that. Lettie was a senior technical writer whereas Jon was just a newbie. While Lettie has a good understanding of the work environment, Jon doesn’t have a clue. I also used Harry, the brilliant programmer, as a source of tension between them. The tension escalates when Jon, in an effort to save Harry’s career, inadvertently undermines Lettie’s position in the company.

Jon and Lettie first get to know each other as they compare notes on Harry Sale. As the story progresses they both start to realize that they are drawn to one another. Lettie denies it at first, but eventually realizes that Jon is something special. I tried to bring a little humor to the many ups and downs in their relationship. They definitely have a few rocky moments!

About the Infinity Program:

Jon Graeme and Harry Sale are unlikely friends. Harry is a world-class programmer, but his abrasive personality alienates co-workers. In contrast, Jon is a handsome and easy-going technical writer, the low man on the IT totem pole.

Sharing a love of nature, the men set out together, planning to go their separate ways--Jon on a hike and Harry, fly fishing. Three days later, Jon arrives at the rendezvous point, but his friend is nowhere in sight. When Jon finds Harry unconscious onthe floor of a cave, Harry claims to have been lying there the entire time. But he is neither cold nor hungry. What Jon doesn't know is that Harry fell into an underground cavern, where he came into contact with an alien quantum computer.

Back at work, Harry jettisons his regular tasks and concentrates exclusively on inventing new operating language to access thealien system. In the process he crashes his office's Super Computer and is fired. Jon convinces the company to give Harry a second chance, arguing that the system he has invented will make them millions.

Jon has no idea what havoc Harry is about to unleash.

About the Author:

Richard H. Hardy was born in Glasgow, Scotland, during a week of relentless bombing raids just before the close of World War II. The day he was born an incendiary bomb fell on the church across the street from where he lived, so he is fond of saying that he entered the world with a big adrenaline rush.

His family later moved to England and then on to America.

After college Richard bounced through a series of temporary jobs as he traveled around the country, wanting nothing more than to write fiction. A job driving a library van allowed him free time to write several short stories and work on a novel.

He and his wife moved to New Hampshire, where he took an entry level job at a software company. He was soon promoted tothe technical writing department and ended up producing over 500,000 words of online documentation. After a few years he was promoted to the programming department and ended up as the Senior EDI Programmer, creating EDI maps and writing UNIX scripts and troubleshooting on AIX systems throughout the U.S. and Canada.

After he retired, he started writing fiction again. The Infinity Program is his first published novel.
