He stood on the snow covered peak, his dark hair flowing in the breeze with his face tilted toward the moon. Damian Andreas was one fine-looking man and I sighed at his eternal beauty. His posture stiffened and his eyes snapped open, scanning the landscape until they landed on me. The slow smile that spread over his lips sent a shiver up my spine ending with a rush of heat that warmed me to my very soul.

Damian dropped from the ledge, morphing into the form of a giant hawk; his wingspan blocked the moon as he circled, descending in a graceful arc until he was within a few feet of the ground. He dropped the last few inches in his human form, his intense gaze locked on mine.

“I thought you were reading,” he said when his hiking boots touched the snow.

“I was, but I thought the fresh air would do me some good.”

He pulled me into his arms and his cool lips brushed mine. His kisses still stunned me as much as they did when we first met. My bones turned to soft clay, melting into him, into his kiss.

The moment our lips separated, the playfulness in his eyes faded and his gaze rose from mine to the trees behind me. His features tensed and he straightened, his eyes narrowing into a glare that bit at my nerves.

“What are you doing here?” he asked in a voice I hardly recognized and I turned, taking in the feral blonde standing at the edge of the woods.

She approached and my pulse jumped at her red eyes and the set of razor teeth gleaming in the moonlight.

“I know your hiding places, Damian,” she said in a sensual purr that hung on the night air. “And so does he.”

Damian’s grasp tightened and he did a quick scan of the area before bringing his gaze back to the woman.

“Don’t worry your pretty little head over it, honey. I took care of his hunters a few days ago.” Her eyes dropped to mine and she licked her lips. “She smells wonderful.”

“The way my wife smells is of no interest to you,” he said, releasing his hold around my waist, taking my hand and stepping in front of me in a protective stance.

“Wife. Wow.” Her perfect brow arched as she renewed her study of me. “And you’re not going to introduce me?”
“Naomi, this is Lilith,” he said with a voice clipped with an underlying warning.

The name Lilith brought forth a wealth of religious information, but this couldn’t possibly be the same as the reference in the old testament. The first woman. The first demon.

I stared at her and she cocked her head, her lips spreading in a sly smile that was meant to chill.

“The story is so much more sordid than those old monks scribed,” she said flipping her hair over her shoulder and igniting my curiosity. “Isn’t that right, Damian?”

Damian squeezed my hand and sent a glance in my direction before sliding it back to Lilith. “What are you doing here?” he asked again, this time measuring each word, conveying his distaste.

“Lucy is back on the prowl and he is in one of the foulest moods this universe has ever seen.”

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“It means he’s hunting and hell bent on finding the two of you.”

“Let him come, this time I won’t stop until he’s dead,” I said and her sharp gaze met mine.

“Sweetheart, if Lucy finds you, you won’t have the strength to fight him.”

“Why the hell not?” I asked and tried to step to Damian’s side but he shot me a glare that froze my feet in place.

“Because he has the last dose of antidote.” Her gaze snapped from mine to Damian’s. “If he uses it on you, you’ll die like that,” she said and snapped her fingers. “But that’s not his intent. He plans on stealing her immortality, and her death will be slow and painful.”

Damian took a step backwards, forcing me to move. “You found a cure?”

“It took me a while, considering I created the damn virus, but I finally found the right mix. Unfortunately, for those of us who have lived longer than the normal human lifespan, the instantaneous aging process means death.” Lilith let out a laugh filled with sarcasm and bitterness and her gaze landed on me. “But for you, my dear, it will strip you of your strength and make you immune to the virus for the rest of your mortal life.”

Damian didn’t respond, but his eyes narrowed and his grip on my hand tightened.

The information took a moment to sink in and I blinked at the sudden flurry of questions flooding my mind. “What do you mean by immune?” I asked, a little surprised at the question that actually popped out of my mouth.

“It means no superior strength or speed and your ability to heal would revert back to the normal human timeframes.” Her gaze flipped back to Damian’s. “And it means she’s toxic to any vampire.” A slow sadistic smile crossed her lips.

The gaze Damian sent my way reflected a level of trepidation I hadn’t seen in years.

Lilith’s laugh pulled my attention back to her.

“Baby, no one dances with the devil and lives to tell about it,” she said and slid her gaze to Damian’s. “Isn’t that right, Damian?”

Book Blast: Never Giving Up and Never Wanting To: A Caregiver’s Journey by Barry Tutor (Alzheimer's/Caregiver) (Presented by Pump Up Your Book Tours)

Like most, I knew about Alzheimer’s disease. It causes old people to forget. When my relationship with this disease began, it highlighted how little I knew. Following my widowed mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, I researched this disease to gain insight about my new role as her caregiver and decision maker. What I learned and experienced during her affliction still left me somewhat unprepared for what was yet to come. Sixteen months following my mother’s diagnosis, my dear wife and best friend was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Though now I was familiar with this silent killer, my wife’s diagnosis set into motion many changes and challenges in our lives. Someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s every sixty-eight seconds. Currently, Alzheimer’s is the only disease in the top-ten causes of death that is on the increase and has no means of prevention and no possible cure. Given these facts, support for those afflicted relies on increasing levels of caregiving as the disease progresses. Let me explain something about this “old folk’s disease.” Alzheimer’s affects more than just parents and grandparents. It is also the disease of siblings, spouses, and children. Alzheimer’s forces many families to decide between home versus institutional care. An estimated fifteen million caregivers provide some level of care to the Alzheimer’s victims still living at home. No matter what level of care you are providing, the importance of preparation is paramount. Arming yourself with knowledge begins that preparation process. I was unprepared for the roller-coaster ride my life became as the sole caregiver for two Alzheimer’s victims. To meet their varied challenges, I adapted and developed multiple techniques for targeted personalized care. If only I knew then what I know now. By sharing my knowledge and experience, I hope to better prepare you for your caregiving journey.

Prologue from Dead Dreams by Emma Right:

They say each dead body, a human corpse, has a scent all of its own, a sweet-sour smell. A cadaver dog picks up the scent as clearly as a mother would recognize the photo of her child. Of course, I wouldn’t know, for I am no dog. I might as well have been, the way I’d stooped to yield to my basic instincts. My mind wandered to her, what her unique smell would be when, and if, they ever were to find her.
After what happened, I decided to write out the events that led to that day and details that might help, in case I’d missed something, or might need it for defense, or in case they found me dead. My relatives might need to piece together the things that had spiraled out of control, if they wanted closure to put me to rest, to forget me altogether. That would be least painful for them. I nodded to myself as I sat in the car. I thought of my most favorite girl in the world: Lilly. At least Lilly’d have my dog, Holly, to remember me by.
My friends used to call me Brie, short for Brianna. But, I could hardly count anyone a friend any more. I’d have to resort to back-watching if I wanted to survive.

He felt as dead as she looked. With each blow to her lifeless body, he felt his sanity ooze, drop after drop, into the pool of her blood. She was dead. Her only hope now was the guy who had stolen her from him.

The knock on the door filled Quinn with loathsome fury. Had he not already been in his demon form, he’d have transformed because the person on the other side of the door deserved what he had unwillingly subjected Cordelia to.

He flung the door open, growling at the winter faery who was keeping Cordelia’s heart beating. Jagger swept past Quinn to the corner of the room, kneeling down beside Cordelia’s torn-up body. His pale winter hue darkened. He shot to his feet, bringing up his leg and slammed his foot into Quinn’s stomach.

Quinn fell back in surprise, his demon exterior not so much as reddening as a result, but he felt on the verge of losing it and tearing Jagger’s head right off of his fey neck. But he checked himself. If Jagger’s heart stopped, so would Cordelia’s, and Quinn couldn’t allow that to happen.

“What the fuck, Quinn? What did you do to her?” Jagger’s voice was barely audible; his mood had turned from anger to desperation as he looked at the body on the floor again.

Quinn transformed back into his human form, revealing a mess of injuries and broken bones. “I had no choice. It was this or death.”

“Or death? She is dead, you moron!”

“No, she isn’t. Her heart is still beating.”

“Only because I’m beating it for her,” Jagger muttered.

“Only because I’m letting you beat it for her,” Quinn said quietly.

“She needs a healer.”

“Wander her back to the Academy. But hurry. Potomal’s team is on their way and will be here soon to collect her.”

“A Wanderer working with Katerina.” Quinn winced at the stabs of pain his human body was unable to dampen.

“What about you? What happened?”

“Cordelia didn’t go down without a fight, but never mind that. I’ll heal. I need you to beat me to within an inch of my life. Here, use this.” He handed Jagger a tire iron.

“Much as I would love to beat the hell out of you, why? If you’re afraid of what they’ll do to you when they find out you let Cordelia escape, why not just come back to the Academy?”

“No time. Plus, the best way for me to protect Cordelia is from the inside. Hurry.”

Jagger glanced down at Cordelia and then raised the iron bar.

“I’m sorry, Yillmara,” the young elf maid said as she wept. “The child does not live.” She held the tiny bundle toward his mother, who slowly took him from the maid’s arms. Yillmara looked upon the lifeless face of her tiny son and wept softly. She closed her eyes and pressed him to her breast. After a moment, though still exhausted from the birth, she rose from her bed with her son in her arms.

“You mustn’t, my lady! You need to rest!” The maid pleaded with her and touched her arm as if to stop her, but Yillmara continued walking. She made her way from her rooms and stepped out into the light of the dawn. It was a cool spring morning, and the sound of the river danced throughout the forest that was home to Yillmara’s people, the Westerling Elves.

Yillmara approached the river slowly, earnestly. She trod lightly so not to offend the Spirit of the river. With her son still in her arms, she walked into the water and fell to her knees, begging for the life of her child. “River Spirit, hear my plea and grant my son his life. He deserves the chance to live, to grow, and to know the beauty of this forest. He should be given the chance to hear the music of the river.”

Slowly, she placed the lifeless body of her son into the water. Hoping for an answer from the River Spirit was foolish, she knew, but what matter was that compared to the life of her child. She covered her eyes and wept. As her tears hit the water, she heard a soft voice around her. It caressed her and consoled her grief. The River Spirit had come. The young mother’s weeping ceased, and she felt pure serenity. “I will gladly trade my life for his,” she said with all the strength of her heart.

With that assurance, the Spirit granted her request. The mother slid gently down into the river, and the child opened his sapphire eyes. The young maid came running to the river’s edge along with Yillmara’s life mate. The maid took the child from the river and rushed him inside to get him warm.

Though he knew his love’s body would fade into the river, Ryllak waded into the water to be near her. He could see her lying serenely in the water, her face peaceful as if sleeping. Reaching his arms out for her came naturally, but it was no use. He could no longer touch his beautiful Yillmara. She was gone forever.

The river had granted the child his life, and in time, the river would reclaim him.

Sapphyria's Review:

Juliana Norris is a Realm Walker with mixed heritage:  half-dark fae and half-mage.  She has a gift that allows her to see the signatures of the various Altered that walk among the humans for tracking purposes and and uncanny ability to spring back to life after being declared dead.  Her mentor, Nathaniel, is a 150 year old werewolf who is, contrary to popular lore, immune to silver.  And, she's been United to a master vampire named Thomas who abandoned her seven years ago right after claiming her as his mate.

The heartache and pain that Juliana endured after Thomas left was more than just the heartbreak and emotional turmoil.  Her true nightmare came in the form of the vampire Thomas left in charge to protect and lead the coven.  After he abused her and tried to kill her, Raoul and his henchmen fled the area.  Juliana and Nathaniel manage to track down and dispose of Raoul's posse but are unsuccessful in capturing Raoul.

When Juliana suddenly sees signatures that can only be identified as being Raoul she doesn't realize just how dire the situation will become.  These sightings also coincide with the sudden reappearance of Thomas, who after seven years, feels that they've been apart long enough.  In Juliana's eyes, however, it's been too long and her anger prevents her (or tries anyway) from accepting him fully back into her life.  That is until Nathaniel becomes the host for one of two demons that start reeking havoc around town.  Realizing that there is much larger problem than her vampire popping back into town, Juliana joins forces with Thomas.

Realm Walker is a gritty urban fantasy that keeps the reader intrigued from the get go.  Juliana is a likable main female character.  She's endure a lot in her young life and is very independent.  The independence actually becomes a problem for her as the story moves through all of the events as she tries to rely less on others and more on herself.  Fortunately, she is able to push some of the stubbornness aside and work together as a team with those around her.  She discovers the truth behind Thomas leaving her, helping her to rectify emotional stresses that she still holds onto.  They don't go away but she's able to work with them until they don't hurt as much ~ in other words ~ we see Juliana realize that maybe Thomas wasn't really trying to devastate her, but we also don't see her cave to his every whim.

Thomas is a likable vampire and mate.  He had his reasons for leaving Juliana for the length of time he did but also comes to understand why he should have gone about things a different way.  His actions, and the actions of those Thomas left in charge, molded Juliana into something that could have been prevented.  When faced with choosing to kill Thomas or attempt to save him, we find that Juliana doesn't dislike him nearly as much as she lets people believe.

I enjoyed the entire novel, never becoming bored or tempted to skim along.  Each scene is vital to the inner workings of Realm Walker, making it a powerful tale of demon rising, demon hunting, and demon defeating.  There are events that unfold that will take your breath away and leave you stunned.  Be prepared for a fantastic ride-along with urban fantasy's brand new heroine ~ Julian Norris - Realm Walker.
