Kim Koning
Kim Koning

Kim is a dark fiction writer with the heart of a poet and the soul of a gypsy while the ancient rhythms of Africa, the birthplace of storytellers, courses through her veins. Wanting to be either a pathologist or a criminal psychologist, life took her on a few twists and turns while studying journalism and after a couple of meandering offshoots that did not involve fiction, fiction finally chose her when she was asked to write a short story for a NZ anthology (which was a National Award Winner). Kim now lives on the beautiful East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island and is lucky enough to call the Pacific Ocean her backyard. She can often be found wandering the cliff tops above the crashing ocean and walking through the lush farmlands that surround the area. But with a heart caught between two lands, the sunburned, ancient Africa and the lush, green islands of New Zealand, she finds her true home within the white pages covered in ink. Her fiction is caught between the dark and mysterious, the truth and the what ifs, secrets and reality, shadows and light. Kim really does see ghosts and her loved ones believe ghosts and extreme weather phenomenon follow her around. She grew up spending holidays and weekends at her grandparents’ large old farm homestead which had a hidden wing that was haunted. These early experiences with haunted homes ignited her imagination and started a spark that made her question what else is out there that we couldn’t see, what is around us observing us? Why could she see these ghosts/spirits and many others couldn’t? The spark was lit and the stories started coming as fast as she could write them down. One of these real life experiences sparked The Redgates Secrets, Kim’s debut 6 part novella series.

Book Tour & Giveaway: "Rest for the Wicked" (The Claire Wiche Chronicles, Book 1) by Cate Dean (Presented by Heroines with Heart)

Claire Wiche is an ordinary woman, running her Wicca shop, The Wiche’s Broom, in an ordinary California beach town. But Claire wasn’t always ordinary, and she isn’t quite human. She hides a secret, and a past she thought she had put behind her.

A past that is about to explode into her present.

When it does, and everyone she loves is in danger, Claire must face up to her past – and become what she left behind in order to save them.

Excerpt: Chapter 1

Claire Wiche guided her unhappy customer through her shop, one arm around the woman’s hunched shoulders.
“You know I don’t do love spells, Mildred.”
“But I know if he could see me, really see me, he’d fall desperately in—”
“Would it be real, if he’s under an enchantment?”
Mildred pouted, not a pretty sight on an eighty-year-old woman. “What happened to the customer is always right?”
Biting her lip on a smile, Claire walked her through the open door.
“Never been my policy. And I have good reasons for that.” She rubbed the old woman’s arm.
“You go on home now. I’ll phone you when my new shipment of crystals shows up.”
Leaning against the narrow porch post, Claire watched her toddle down the sidewalk, sunlight bouncing off the thin silver poodle curls. The morning gloom had burned off early, and it looked like the start of another beautiful day.
She crossed her arms, cold despite the sweater she slipped on earlier. It took longer to warm up lately, a fact she did her best to ignore.
“Are you cold again, Claire? It’s got to be at least 80 in the store.”
Unless, of course, a well-meaning friend shoved it in her face.
She turned around, forced a smile. “Is it, Annie? I must have forgotten to turn it down this morning.”
“How could you not notice? The candles are sweating.” Annie Sullivan—the lively, noholds-barred friend Claire never expected to have in her life—stepped across the small porch that ran along the front of the shop, her almost six foot height topping Claire by a good ten inches.
She caught one hand before Claire could shove them in her pockets. “You’re like ice. Again.”
She looked down at Claire, concern in her warm brown eyes. “And you’re avoiding. Again.”
With a sigh, Claire squeezed her hand before easing out of it. The warmth in Annie’s fingers made her skin tingle, yearn.
“Time to turn that heat down before the candles become a puddle.”
Annie followed her back inside, hovering while she adjusted the thermostat to a more reasonable temperature. She would need a heavier sweater.“Come on,” Annie said, hands on her hips. “Give.”
Shaking her head, Claire smiled, a real smile this time. “Would I’m just cold and tired do it for you?”
“Hardly.” Annie stood in front of the counter, looking like a golden Amazon ready for battle.
“But it’ll have to until I can get you drunk and pry the truth out of you.”
Laughter burst out of Claire. “I’d like to see that.”
“Yeah, so would I. If you actually touched the stuff.” She gave Claire a wicked smile. “I could always slip you a mickey.”
“You could—if I wasn’t able to smell it from across the room.”
“Slapped down again. Hey—what if we just tried—”
“Not again. Never again.” Claire still felt the residual agony from her one failed attempt at social drinking.
“How do you do that?” Those warm brown eyes narrowed as they studied her. “How do you always know what I’m going to say?”
Claire reached up and patted her cheek. “I’m a witch, sweetheart. It’s what I do.”
“Wait.” She grabbed Claire’s hand, pushed her sleeve up to reveal the bandage that peeked out. “Is that another tattoo? What is it this time?”
Claire flushed. The second reason she put on a sweater this morning.
“A triquetra.”
“More protection? Jeez, Claire, the pentacle on your hip isn’t enough?”
“There is no such thing as too much protection.” She pulled free and walked around the counter. “And the subject is closed.”
“Okay, I can take a hint. I’ll drop in sometime tomorrow, see if you need any help during the festival madness.”
“That will be most appreciated.”
Annie strode to the door, her long legs taking her through the small shop in a few paces. She paused in the doorway. “Hey, Claire—I’m worried, and I poke when I’m worried. I’ll leave it alone for now. But if you don’t get better, I’ll do more than poke.”
“Annie.” She stuck her head back in. “Don’t you even think about taking on Mildred’s love spell.”
Color rushed into her cheeks.“I wasn’t—”
“I mean it. Last time you nearly had your victim falling in love with her cat.”
“Never gonna let me live that one down, are you?”
Claire smiled. “Not if it keeps you from trying again.”
Annie cursed under her breath and stalked out.
Chuckling, Claire made a mental note to put feelers out. Annie had more than enough power, and just enough knowledge to make her dangerous.
Without warning the pain stabbed her; a blade of ice in her gut.
Bracing her hands on the counter, she fought to breathe, fought to keep herself upright.
Shaking so hard her rings clattered against the granite countertop, she gained enough control to lower herself to the chair that she recently added, out of necessity.
“God above—” She pressed both arms against her stomach, prayed for a slow morning. If she believed God would actually listen to her, after all this time, she’d ask the single question that haunted her.
Is this how it feels to be dying?

Saph's Review:

Ash Krafton's "Doorways" is a collection of 3 short stories titled:  "A Compassionate Death," "Anamnesis," and "Provision."  These truly are "Three Tales of No Going Back."

"A Compassionate Death" is a creepy tale of a nurse and the little boy that passed on....Or did he?
(Originally published in The Absent Willow Review, January 2011).

"Anamnesis" finds us in the home of a single mother suddenly confronted by the father of her child.  All is not as it seems when suppressed memories consumer her.  She must do everything she can to protect her son.
(Originally published in Silver Blade magazine, November 2009).

"Provision" is tale of a father who did what he thought was right, one dark and stormy night.....
(Originally published in Dark and Dreary magazine, September 2009; the anthology Quakes and Storms, in April 2011; and on the Wax of the Buffalo podcast).

These stories are well written and feature interesting plot lines.  Even though they are short, each tale incorporates great development; story and character, and conveys exactly what the author wants to convey - a tale where once decisions are made, they are permanent and no one can change their mind or go back.  What's done, is done!

Synopsis Via

A collection of three horror stories all with very surprising twists in the plots. Sometimes people are either good or evil, sometimes they are both as this book explores. 32 pages long

Saph's Review:

"Bloody Secrets" is a 33 page novella containing 3 unrelated short stories.

Here is a quick run-down of the 3 stories (as per an Amazon synopsis created by the author):

#1:  Snaps & Blood

"A confused young man who had a past mental illness facing a sociopath."

#2:  Seeking the Dreaded Truth

"Man haunted by his past memory uncovers chilling truth about people in his past"

#3:  Cursed Village

"Highly superstitious village, sometimes takes horrible punishment into their own hands."

Each story blends suspense with horror into a terrifying, unexpected ending. The themes are original and captivating. Each story contains enough back story to clue the reader in to why they are at the point that they are and why the story progresses like it does.

However....some of the language is choppy and/or uneven. Various points in the dialogue are awkward or don't transition well.  If you can get beyond those issues, this is a gruesome little book of short stories sure to keep you entertained.

This is a great start to a writing career!

Excerpt (Ch. 1):

Although she was only five miles from the security of her little town, Karen White’s hand trembled as she shut the door of her mud-splattered Jeep.

Glancing skyward, she noticed familiar gray clouds. Rain was in the air; she could smell it. Cherry Creek was a magnet for grey skies and rain. The flourishing grassy farmlands and surrounding forest ranges gave the town its green hue while Mount Hood towered in the background, its majesty inspiring protection.

At the moment, Karen wasn’t at all encouraged by her picturesque surroundings; rather, she was on the verge of a full-fledged panic attack.

Glancing up at the stately, snowcapped mountain, she felt so insignificant, inadequate. She’d never imagined herself as a spy, but she knew — God didn’t make mistakes. If He wanted her to play detective, she would.

Walking toward the Henderson’s abandoned farmhouse, she fought the urge to turn back. The place was already filling her with an eerie uneasiness that increased with every step.

On the outside, the building looked pitiful: chipped paint, missing shingles, broken windows. Its apparent state of neglect belied the truth Karen had learned listening to the town’s two worst chatty-Cathie’s at Monty’s Styling Salon last week. It amazed her that a secret society would invite such loose-lipped ladies into its concealed depths. Those same lips had gushed that the Henderson property was a decoy for a high-tech compound hidden beneath. From her vantage point nothing appeared high-tech.

She gazed up at the barn. It loomed threateningly behind the old farmhouse. To her relief, there didn’t appear to be anyone around as she picked her way up the path through the swaying grass. Perhaps she was early?

She gasped, shocked by a thick hand grasping her shoulder, pulling her to a stop. She cringed as recognition dawned. Byron Marker gave off that cringe-inducing feeling anytime he was near. Lost in her thoughts, she’d missed him creeping up behind her.

“Glad to see you accepted my invitation. I wasn’t sure you’d show up. Your familiarity with the town’s archives will be of great benefit to The Cause,” Byron Marker oozed. He sounded not only creepy, but also strangely formal.

Attempting to camouflage her anxiety, she forced her eyes to meet his. “I hope I can help.” She made a point of scanning the area. “Is your daddy, Mr. Police Chief, here too?”

His disapproving expression led her to quickly change the subject to what she hoped was an approved topic: “Being part of such a powerful organization is an honor.” She wondered if it was enough to diffuse the tension.

His expression remained guarded, providing little assurance.

Forgive me for that lie, she prayed. God, please protect me, guide me, and reveal to me what You will.

Byron ignored the inquiry about his father and guided her around the old farmhouse, to the backyard, where they joined a group of at least fifty people clustered outside the barn’s main entrance.

“Why can’t we go in?” she whispered.

“They’re probably still preparing the room.” He didn’t elaborate. “It’s quite an event.

This is insane. God, I can’t do this!

Before she could muster an excuse for leaving, she spotted the two women from Monty’s Styling Salon. Why hadn’t she rescheduled her hair appointment? Shirley, her regular stylist, had been out sick.

Jolted back to the moment by a slight shove, she moved with the crowd, prodded forward like cattle. She crossed the threshold into the vacant barn, wishing for the final time that she’d stayed out of Joyce and Lori’s conversation. But the truth remained: She believed God had spoken to her, desiring for her to go. That knowledge had changed everything.

Okay, God, I’m in. Please stay right next to me and don’t let me make a fool of myself. She prayed with the fervency of a child reaching for a trusted hand in a windstorm. She wasn’t disappointed.

Peace caressed her spirit, bringing much-needed comfort along with a strong sense of purpose and God’s presence, convincing her she was exactly, no matter how wacky it appeared, where she was supposed to be. The renewed sense of purpose gave her enough courage to follow the others down the stairs and into the passageway below, where the corridor fanned out into another vast room.

“Remove your clothing and put on the robes provided,” an unidentified voice boomed, threatening to disrupt her newly-acquired confidence. Take off her clothes! Why? She hadn’t anticipated this.

About the Author:

Like most authors, Carol Van Atta is no stranger to the written word. She penned a short novel at age 12 (somewhat frightening illustrations included) and had a creative writing piece published in her high school newspaper. Devouring books from numerous genres, she developed a thirst for more reading materials and could almost always be found with her nose in a book. She has contributed to several popular inspirational anthologies and devotionals, published by Zondervan and Regal Publications, and was a regular writer for Campus Crusade for Christ's Christian Women Today. Writing fiction is her greatest joy. Soul Defenders: The Black Orchids, is the first book in a trilogy of spiritual warfare thrillers.

I want to learn about all of the spirit animals. I research Sebastian’s spirit animal and find that it is has a strong connection to the falcon. The falcon is supposedly my spirit animal. This makes sense because I feel so incredibly connected to Sebastian and I hardly know him. When we read that piece together we look at each other and smile. The book states that the falcon and grizzly bear have a have a dual understanding and that their signs are compatible with one another. This reminds me of the daily horoscope that you read on the internet.
Captivated by the content of information that I am uncovering I decide to read aloud, “When the earth sign visionary and air sign visionary combine forces they find that they create a long lasting bond as well as a colossal amount of positive energy. When each spirit animal has reached a higher level of visionary status, they will uncover their destined mission. They will experience an increase in their already heightened awareness and senses and gain the ability to unleash superior powers.”

Spotlight and Giveaway: "For the Love of Hades" (Loves of Olympus, Book 2) by Sasha Summers (Presented by Bewitching Book Tours)

Book Description:

Hades, the Lord of the Underworld, has no patience for living things or his Olympian brethren. His purpose is order, administering justice to those who enter his realm, and keeping the balance decreed by the Fates. Meeting Persephone sways his focus, her gentle sweetness threatening his control. But he will not be tempted.

Poseidon’s scheming wreaks havoc upon Persephone. Hades has no choice - he must rescue her.

Hades awakens something within the Goddess Persephone. She feels no fear from his brooding presence. In truth, she’s never felt so alive. Every stolen moment together only confirms her instinct: he is meant to be hers. Such a powerful union suit will face opposition – from Olympus, her troubled betrothed, the Fates, even Hades himself – but she is determined to win his heart.

Hades, God of Death, has no heart. Persephone is determined to prove otherwise…

Hades glanced at the lily propped atop the mantle. The blossom was bright white against the black silk to which it was pinned, light against the darkness. He reached up, tracing one petal with an unsteady finger. He saw the tremor, cursed it, and clenched his hand, drawing back from the flower as if it had burned him.

Turning abruptly from the fire, he made his way to his chair and sat heavily. There was a sweetness to his burden, but it was no less a burden.

He leaned forward, rested his elbows on his knees and covered his face with his hands.

What had he done? How could he make amends now that his heinous act had been hidden so long? Using his powers to aid a mortal would seem trivial in comparison with the offense he’d committed against Demeter. Against Olympus.

And yet, he felt whole.

The raw emptiness that he’d held at bay, for nigh on an eternity, no longer threatened to consume him. Having her here, with her constant laughter and endless conversation, had changed his world irrevocably.

If not for her, he would have remained bitter and angry. He would not have interfered at Cyprus. He would never have thought to champion the mortal, Ariston…

“My lord.” Her soft voice interrupted his thoughts.

He lifted his head from his hands, surprised.

Persephone stood, beauty to behold, watching him with wide green eyes. In the blazing firelight her hair glowed copper, warm and rich. Her face, normally alight with smiles and laughter, was drawn. Was she not fully recovered? Or did the tension between them tire her as well?

His voice revealed nothing. “Persephone.”

Her steps were cautious, but she made her way to him. “Aphrodite?”

So she had seen Aphrodite. “Has gone.” And she should have gone with her fellow Olympian. He should have insisted she do so. He swallowed against the lump in his throat, ignoring the tightening in his chest.

“I thought as much.” She stood so close he could see the front of her tunic. The fabric trembled, thundering in time with the rapid beat of her heart.

Was she disappointed? Was she ready to leave him… his realm?

She should go. She should have gone weeks ago. He knew it was right. Yet knowing it did nothing to soothe his agitation. He clutched the arms of his throne, clinging to control.

“I’ve not asked you for anything in my time here.” She paused. “Have I?”

He shook his head once. No, she’d seemed happy, though he had little knowledge of true happiness, he supposed. His gaze found shadows beneath her eyes and a tightness about her mouth. He was a blind fool.

Have you been miserable? He could not ask the words aloud, fearing her answer.

Her voice was no steadier than her pulse. “Nor would I trouble you now, if my need were not so great.”

“What is it?” he asked. His voice sounded harsh to his own ears.

She sank to her knees, glancing at him with an almost timid gaze. Her hands lifted, wavered, and covered his hands. He stiffened, stunned by her actions. She touched him… He swallowed. The feel of her hands upon him squeezed the air from his lungs.

“Show me mercy. Show me the same mercy you’ve bestowed upon the mortal… the soldier Ariston.” Her hands clasped his tightly.

He would not reach for her, he could not. No matter how he might want to.

“Have I been cruel, that you feel the need to beg for anything from me?” His words were a harsh whisper. She shook her head and he continued, “Then why do you kneel before me?”

“It is a selfish request, one that may turn you from solicitous to,” she paused, her cheeks growing red, “… sickened.”

Was it possible for him to feel so towards her?

He stared at her hands, wrapped about his. He would not meet her gaze. He would not reveal his damnable weakness to her. He could not risk losing himself in the fathomless depths of her green eyes. “Ask me,” he murmured as his traitorous eyes sought hers.

She drew in a wavering breath, ragged and labored. Her whispered words were thick.

“My lover… Release him. Release the man who loves me, please.” Her eyes sparkled, mesmerizing him while his heart, so newly discovered, seemed to shudder to a stop once more.

About the Author :

Sasha Summers is part gypsy. Her passions have always been storytelling, history, and travel. It's no surprise that her books visit times past, set in places rich with legends and myth. Her first play, 'Greek Gods and Goddesses' (original title, right?), was written for her Girl Scout troop.

She's been writing ever since. She loves getting lost in the worlds and characters she creates; even if she frequently forgets to run the dishwasher or wash socks when she's doing so. Luckily, her four brilliant children and hero-inspiring hubby are super understanding and supportive.

Sasha is an active member of RWA and several Texas Chapters. A self-proclaimed movie-addict, she is full of all sorts of useless movie tidbits and trivia.

Medusa A Love Story
Loves of Olympus Book One
By Sasha Summers

Book Description:

It's said love can change a person. Medusa wasn't always a monster...

Medusa is ruled by duty, to her Titan father and the Goddess Athena. She's no room for the tenderness her warrior guard, Ariston, stirs. When Olympus frees her from service, her heart leads her into the arms of the guard she loves... and curses her as the creature with serpent locks.

Ariston goes to war with a full heart... and dreadful foreboding. He learns too late of the danger Medusa faces, alone, and a Persian blade sends him into the Underworld. But death, curses, nor the wrath of the Gods will keep him from returning to her.

Poseidon will use Greece's war to get what he wants: Medusa. He does not care that she belongs to another. He does not care that she will be damned. He is a God, an Olympian, and she will be his.

"This tragic and beautiful retelling of one of the world's oldest stories tackles the eternal battle between duty and happiness. Medusa, A Love Story broke my heart then filled in the cracks with joy. Sasha Summers is simply a mesmerizing new talent." ~Stephanie Dray, Author of the critically acclaimed Song of the Nile
