Review: The Howling Heart by April Bostic (Presented by Tribute Books)

The Howling Heart Book Summary:

Paige Donovan is an ambitious college graduate who aspires to reach the top of the corporate ladder. She’s climbing fast when given the promotion of a lifetime at a prestigious fashion magazine in New York City. Her bright future comes to an unexpected halt after news of her father’s death. She inherits his old cabin in the Colorado Rockies, and just when she thinks her luck couldn’t get any worse, she has a car accident in the mountains and awakens in the small, remote community of Black River.

Soon, she’s engulfed in the mystical world of Varulv---wolves descended from 13th century Scandinavia and blessed by Norse gods with the ability to appear human. Paige is desperate to return home, but never expects to fall for her rescuer, Riley Gray, a charming young werewolf from England who offers her an alternate future with his pack. Now, she must choose between the career she’s always wanted and the love she’s always dreamed.

Sapphyria's Review:

When Paige was a child, she and her parents spent summers in a cabin in Colorado.  After a long day of listening to her parents fight, Paige decides to run away only to be surrounded by wolves and one little puppy who protects her.  She also unites with a small boy who comes out of the woods without clothes.  After finding dead animals in her room each morning, her parents never return to the cabin and divorce.

Flash forward:  Paige is all grown up now and  has been promoted to Creative Director for the fashion magazine Elle.  Just as she's climbing the corporate ladder, her world comes crashing down.  Her father dies suddenly, permanently taking a piece of her with him to the grave.  Then Paige gets the surprise of her life when part of her inheritance includes the cabin that she was told her father sold during the divorce.

If only the inheritance of the cabin was indeed the surprise of her life.....Paige is being stalked by a white wolf all while the townsfolk deny wolves in the area then gets into a car accident when the white wolf streaks across the road in front of her.  Her savior is a man she caught watching her when she first got into town and she's in his home - not a hospital.  And the surprises just keep coming.  Her introduction into the world of Varulv werewolves is less than subtle and the threat of death has her wanting to run back home to New York.

The only thing keeping her grounded are the beautiful eyes of Riley, her savior, who also happens to be the small boy from her youth.  He claimed her (in name only) as his mate the night he met her as both a little white puppy and a naked little boy.  He has been waiting for her to return to the cabin for his entire life and now that she's here he can't accept that she wants to leave.  She's who he wants for a mate.

The Howling Heart is a nice, fast-paced novel. I enjoy shifter novels very much and this was no exception. The plot was decently constructed and pretty solid. April Bostic's werewolves are different that the mainstream wolf stories portray but you'll have to read the story to find the particulars.  Riley is hunky and dominant in his role in the novel making him the perfect shoe-in for Alpha one day.  Paige is a highly successful city girl and written in such a way that you feel for her in the decisions that are thrust upon her to make.

The only main complaints really are that Paige's acceptance of the existence of werewolves and her acceptance of Riley were pretty quick.  I realize she took a nosedive out of a bathroom window at the introduction of the paranormal but all-in-all it just seemed to fast to me and unrealistic.  Paige also clung to Riley awfully fast.  She left New York not only after her father died but prior to that, she caught her boyfriend cheating on her.  Can you say "Rebound?"
