Saph's Review:

When Jolie decides to complete her thesis by investigating the disappearances of children and sightings of ghosts in the town of Folette, Louisianna, she hasn't a clue the effects this small town will have on her.  As she gets further embroiled in the quest to find out what happened to the children, Jolie then discovers a horrendous situation involving her family.  Add in brothers Hutch and Tucker, and Jolie discovers that not everything or everyone is what they seem.  Will Jolie get the answers she's looking for before the nightmare consumes her?

This is a very intense novel.  What starts off as a quest to complete her thesis turns into a life altering experience.  Jolie discovers secrets in Folette that has her questioning her life, her parents, and her past.

Someone in Folette is kidnapping children and has been for years.  The local police and other law enforcement agents don't seem to be taking the disappearances seriously.  Only when Jolie starts questioning the disappearances do people start talking.  And when she stumbles upon information that leads back to an old family friend of her parents' she's shocked to learn that her perfect little life isn't so perfect.

Jolie is a strong main character that really gets put through the wringer in this novel.  She has to absorb a lot of life changing information regarding her beliefs, morals, and history.  As her world crumbles, she's forced to stare these issues in the face and demand the truth, which gets pretty scary at times.  Her quasi-relationship with Hutch seems quite off-balance but when she discovers Tucker, her feeling of rightness with the world settle around her.

There are many key players in "Becoming Jolie" that have important roles to play within the pages of the novel.  Each has a link to the missing children and some links are more sinister than others.

An intriguing novel!!

The kiss is tender, as usual. But aggressive in a way that makes me regret inviting him over. Maybe I should have just gone to the mountains. Watching Dad play the part of the Holly King for the coven’s Yule ritual would be less uncomfortable.

Toby pulls my right leg over his lap, so that I face him.

He really is good at multi-tasking, I think as our lips stay connected the whole time.

His hands snake up my back and as he pulls me closer to him, he lets out a low moan.

This is going way too fast.

After several tries, I pull away with success.

“What?” Toby asks, breathless. His face is flushed in the muted glow of the living room.

“I just…I’m kind of…are you sure you’re not hungry?”

“Positive.” He pulls me back to him. “I have everything I need right here.”

This time I kiss him. I figure, if I take the lead, I can determine the pace. But I’m wrong. Five minutes later, Toby’s thick fingers are fumbling with the buttons on my shirt.

I put my hands over his. “Wait.”

“You should’ve worn a t-shirt,” he says laughing. “Do you want to do the honors?”

I shake my head, roll off him and sit up. “I think maybe we’re going too fast.”

Toby props himself up on one elbow. “I can go slower. Sorry, I’m just excited, that’s all.” He reaches forward to cup my chin.

Excited is an understatement.

“No, Toby. I mean with everything. Maybe we should…wait.”

He drops his arm and looks up at me, his hopeful expression falling.

“I’m sorry,” I say. “I thought I was ready. I just feel like this is too weird. In my living room, when my parents aren’t home. I mean, what if they walked in or—”

“You said they wouldn’t be home until tomorrow.” Toby sits up. “And you promised.”

“I know, I just—”

“How long am I supposed to wait, Baltimore, huh? We’ve been together for almost two years. Do you have any idea how hard it’s been?”

“No. Why don’t you enlighten me?” I cross my arms.

“Are you kidding? In case you haven’t noticed you’re kind of the town freak.”

My mouth drops open and I narrow my eyes. “Then I guess that makes you the village idiot.”

“Maybe it does. I mean, I like you. A lot. I always have. You know what my friends say? That you put some kind of spell on me. That you’re controlling my feelings.”

I can’t hold back the bark of laughter. “Seriously? And, what? Now you’re thinking there’s some truth to that bull?”

Toby slips his shirt back over his head and stands to his feet. “I don’t know what to think. I know that despite your quirks, I’m still into you. But it doesn’t seem to be paying off, does it?”

“Quirks?” I gape.

“Your parents are witches.” Toby throws his hands in the air. “You’re…well not my regular type.”

“You mean I’m not blonde and blue-eyed.”

“No. You’re different. You’re not one of those girls who cares what she looks like.”

Was that supposed to be a compliment? “Wow.”

“I mean you’re beautiful. I love your face. Your skin. Even your hair.”

I push past him and head to the kitchen. “You should stop talking now.”

Toby grabs my wrist. “I’m serious, Baltimore. I’m so into you it hurts, but sometimes I swear you don’t see me the same way.”

I sigh and allow him to entwine his fingers with mine. “What are you saying? Sleeping with you will validate my feelings for you?”

Toby kisses my nose. “It would mean a lot to me if we could get past this. I love everything about you.” He tugs on one of my dreadlocks. “And I want to love even more of you.”

Our lips meet again and as I wrap my arms around his neck, I consider his words. Maybe he’s right. Then why do I feel so sick about it?

I pull away and meet his gaze. “I promise you, when the time is right I’ll—”

His mouth covers mine again, muffling my words. I grunt beneath his body and as he pins me to the kitchen wall, I push against his heavy chest but Toby’s hands tighten around my waist. I thrust my knee upward, connecting with his groin.

He yelps, staggering backwards. “What the hell?” He hunches over, steadying himself with one hand on the kitchen table. “What’d you do that for?”

“Me?” I back up and wipe my mouth with the back of my hand.

“So that’s it? The answer’s just no?”

“I’m saying not right now. I’m not ready.”

“Baltimore.” He holds me by my shoulders, squeezing a little bit harder than normal. “Don’t do this to me. I love you.”

“Then wait.” I’d seen that response in a movie once. And was ready to use it at a moment’s notice. The moment is right, but it has no effect on him.

He grabs me again, holding tighter this time. Palming the back of my head he smothers my lips with his eager wet ones.

“No.” I push him hard startled by the volume of my voice.

When the ground shakes beneath me and the dishes begin to rattle, I subconsciously go into survival mode. It isn’t until I’m under the kitchen table looking up at Toby that I realize how silly the situation is.

Earthquakes in Utah?

Toby glances around, frantic. Flames explode from the fireplace and he yelps. Water burst from the sprinklers and he covers his head with his arms. When the porch door flies open sending a tunnel of wind through the kitchen, the look on his face is one of pure astonishment.

Our eyes meet and for the first time I see something on Toby’s face I’ve never seen before. Fear. Of me.

About the Author:

From a very young age, Kelbian loved to read. She found herself engulfed in novels by Janette Oke and L.M. Montgomery, but never seemed to find herself in the pages. At the age of 11 she declared she would write stories that had to do with her own experience, and be the youngest author in history. But life was full of baseball, homework, best friends and boys.

Decades later, having studied writing in college and pursued it as a career, Kelbian decided it was time to get back to her dream. She started writing again, joined a critique group and wrote two novels. Then in March 2011, along came Elemental. This time life's distractions couldn't shake the feeling that the world needed to hear Baltimore's story. At least those who would listen! A year later, Kelbian is excited to introduce Elemental to the world with hopes someone will love the story as much as she does.

Kelbian lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with her two children.

Blog Tour and Giveaway: "Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet" and "Death and the Girl Next Door" by Darynda Jones

I'm very excited to be part of the Blog Tour for Book 4, "Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet", and what I feel is one of the all-time greatest book series' out there - Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson-Grim Reaper series is as fantastic as it is funny.

To top it all off--Guess What I Have?? No, not a hot picture of Reyes...although, I wonder if someone ::cough:: Darynda ::cough:: could hook me up with that?! Well, anyway, I have a secret ::sort of stolen:: page out of Lorelei's diary.

Who is Lorelei, you ask? She doesn't sound familiar and don't remember reading about her in any of the Charley Davidson books.

Lorelei is the main character in the upcoming release of Darynda's new Darklight Series - "Death and the Girl Next Door" (Darklight Book #1).

Diary Entry ::Stolen::, Ahem, Obtained and Presented To Sapphyria:

Dear Diary,

That’s a great name, by the way. Since this is my first entry, I’ll introduce myself. My name is Lorelei McAlister, and I think I was supposed to die today. As hard as it may be for you to believe, I was hit by a truck. A big one. And I’m pretty sure my neck broke when I landed a block away. But then this guy, the new kid with deep brown eyes and a mischievous smile that melts my insides, kneeled over me. He smiled that smile and while I was busy melting, he put a hand on my chest and closed his beautiful eyes. That’s when I felt life flow back into me like a warm sea crashing against my bones. And no matter what that crazy kid Cameron says, Jared was sent to save me, not to kill me. If he’d wanted me dead, why am I here now? Why am I still breathing? But Cameron insists Jared is not what he pretends to be. Of course, I kind of figured that out when time stopped and the two of them fought like ancient warriors on a battlefield. They tore up half of downtown. They were so strong and so fast that . . .

Oh, wait. Grandma’s calling. I’ll tell you the rest later, because you will not believe the rest of my day.

Wait..What?  That's not enough to convince you to pre-order Death and the Girl Next Door? Ok--How about an excerpt?

Death and the Girl Next Door (excerpt)
By Darynda Jones
I laughed to myself and headed toward the back of our favorite
and pretty much only hangout. It sat a mere block from our
alma mater, Riley High, and we practically lived in our corner
booth. I ducked past the snack counter and into a very dark back
hall. Judging by the boxes lining the narrow passage, I’d be taking
my life into my hands if I risked a journey to the little senorita’s
room without illumination, so I ran my hand along a
paneled wall. Where would I be if I were a light switch? Just as
the tips of my fingers found the switch, a silhouette stepped out
of the shadows and brushed past me. I startled with a gasp.

“Excuse me,” I said, placing a hand over my heart.

“Sorry.” The guy paused slightly before continuing on his
way, and in that instant, I saw the makings of utter perfection: a
long arm with shadowy curves that dipped around the fluid
lines of muscle; a tall, wide shoulder; dark hair that curled playfully
over an ear and led to a strong, masculine jaw. Something
inside me lurched, craving a closer look at his face, but he walked
by too fast and the hall was too dark for me to catch anything

After a couple of seconds, I realized my hand had brushed
against his arm. It was enough to send a vision crashing into me,
like the flash of a nuclear bomb, bright and unforgiving. Tamping
down my surprise— I hadn’t had a vision in a very long time— I
pressed shaking fingers to my forehead to wait out the familiar
storm, to see what treasures would wash ashore in the aftermath.

Yet the things I saw were unreal, impossible, and certainly not
of this world: A desolate landscape lay before me with scorched
clouds and a roiling, violet sky. The air was stagnant and so impossibly
thick, breathing it took effort. Then I heard the clanging
of metal. I turned to watch in horror as a being, a boy of no more
than sixteen or seventeen, fierce and somehow not quite human,
struggled with a dark, monstrous beast. The boy’s arms corded as
tendon and muscle strained against the weight of the sword he
wielded. He slashed again and again, but the monster was fast,
with razorlike talons and sharp, gleaming teeth, and the boy
knew what those teeth felt like when they sank into flesh, knew
the blinding pain that accompanied defeat. But he also knew the
power he himself wielded, the raw strength that saturated every
molecule of his body.

Another herculean effort landed a thrust in the monster’s
shoulder and continued through its thick chest. The monster
sank under the boy’s sword with a guttural scream. The boy
looked on while the beast writhed in pain, watched it grow still
as the life drained out of it, and somewhere in the back of the
boy’s mind, he allowed himself to register the burning of his
lungs as he struggled to fill them with air.

Blood trickled between his fingers, down the length of his
blade, and dripped to the powdery earth beneath his feet. I followed
the trail of blood up to three huge gashes across his chest.
Evidently three of the monster’s claws had met their mark,
laying the flesh of its enemy open. I gasped and covered my
mouth with both hands as the boy spun toward me, sword at the
ready. Squinting against the low sun, I could almost make out
his features, but the vision evaporated before I got the chance. A
heartbeat later, I was back in the dark hallway, gasping for air,
one palm pressed against my temple, the other against the wall
for balance.

I squeezed my eyes shut, fought the memory of the vision,
the fear that summoned the taste of bile in the back of my throat,
the feel of blood dripping down the boy’s arm.

So, if that doesn't get you moving to pre-order it, I don't know what will!

Cover Reveal and Excerpt: Elizabeth Hunter's "Building From Ashes" (An Elemental World Novel)

Coming on October 23rd, the first book in the expanded Elemental World series
by Elizabeth Hunter

For a thousand years, powerful earth vampire Carwyn ap Bryn has served others. God. His family. His friends. But tragedy and loss disrupt his peaceful existence, causing him to question everything he has committed his eternity to.

Brigid Connor has known about vampires since they rescued her from a painful childhood. But not even their vast elemental power can save her from the demons that torment her.

As loyalties are tested and new paths are forged, a lurking danger slowly grows in the Elemental World. Carwyn and Brigid will learn that even secrets revealed can come back to haunt you when you least expect it.

She focused on the flames as the dog’s excited barks grew. Soon, he was circling a rise in the hill, jumping and dancing in the moonlight.
“Madoc?” What was he on about? He never reacted like this when Tavish was approaching. “What is it, you mad beast?”
The fire drifted away, and Brigid’s heart began to pick up a slow beat as she saw the ground shift under Madoc’s feet. What the—
The ground burst open with a shout as Madoc pounced. Brigid ran over, her arms lit, ready to burn whatever had attacked her dog. She immediately halted when she heard the familiar laugh and the loud voice.
“I heard you barking from twenty feet below, you mad hound! Haven’t you ever heard of the element of surprise? I’ll not be taking you on any missions of stealth, you can be sure of that.”
His dark red hair was flaked with dirt, and his skin was black with mud, but when Carwyn turned to her, there was no mistaking his vivid blue eyes. She broke into a smile just as he rose to his feet. She started toward him, but he only held up a finger.
“One moment,” he said with a grin. Then he stripped off his shirt, tossed it onto grass and dove into the water with glee. Madoc barked along the edge of the lake, waiting for his master to emerge.
He was back.
Her heart was racing now. Did he remember it had been a year? Did he come back for her?
She banished the thought from her mind. Of course he didn’t come back for her. Not like that. He was watching out for her. Like… a priest. Or a friend. Which he was. A priest. A friendly priest.
Then he rose from the lake, the water scattering from his arms as he pushed back his unruly wet hair. Rivulets ran over the dark freckles on his shoulders and down his torso. Thick muscles flexed as the cool moon reflected off the solid planes of his chest. Dark red hair ran in a line down his flat stomach and into dripping wet trousers that covered his hips and muscular legs. Brigid was struck again by his size. Carwyn was enormous. Tall as a small tree and solid as the earth he controlled. He should have been intimidating. But he wasn’t.
He was back.
Damn it.
Priest! Her mind yelled. But Father Jacob didn’t look anything like that. Had Carwyn always had so many muscles? There seemed to be more than the last time she had seen him. Did that happen with vampires? Had he been… working out? He strode toward her with a smile.
“Surprised to see me? Despite this mutt’s warning?”
“Um…” Wasn’t there some rule that priests had to be thin and academic?
Or fat and jolly? Safe and approachable?
Carwyn was standing in front of her. “Are you all right?”
“I’m… fine!” she squeaked.
“Are you sure? Sorry I gave you a start.”
She squeezed her eyes shut. Father Carwyn ap Bryn was approachable, all right, but not for any reasons the pope would approve of.

By SM Blooding

There are many reasons why I love Steampunk!

In the era Steampunk is usually written, which is the beginning of the Industrial Age, we literally thought anything was possible. We’d just seen the horse and buggy, which had been used in various stages for the past several millennia, replaced by a vehicle that worked with gears and a motor. We flew with power and control that a hot air balloon just can’t compete with. We conquered the Wild West. Women made their mark, started going to universities. We pushed railroad through unapproachable territories. The sky was the limit! The feeling of this era is intoxicating. I mean, just picture yourself in that time; watching your first movie, hearing your first radio show, going on your first airplane ride, driving a car for the first time.

I had the opportunity to talk to my grandmother when I was younger, and she was still alive, and she had all these stories. At the time, I poo-pooed what she said. I ignored the wonder in her eyes as she talked about all these things, but as I got older, I started thinking of the stories I would tell my great-great grandchildren. What had I seen? What had my generation done? Hers had won a world war. Her generation had shown the world that we were the strongest nation. Her generation dared to be different, paved paths that were previously thought to be impossible.

I think the thing that draws me the most to Steampunk is the sense of wonder. We literally thought at the beginning of the 20th century that we would have cities under the sea, that we could build cities in the air. We thought the common mode of transportation would be flying cars. We had such big dreams and huge hopes for the future.

That was the route we actually took, though. In Steampunk, we kinda follow that same path, but we veer left. We use resources that are easier on our environment, and toy with renewable energies. Instead of shooting bullets that run out, we shoot electro-static, which is, in theory, is easy to generate while it’s working.

That, I think, is the second biggest reason I love Steampunk. We have planes that flap their wings, airships that use steam. The weapons that were thought up in Steampunk works are just as interesting. Electro-static, electric-array, plasma-pistols. What you don’t typically see are expendable sources. You see vehicles that are just crazy (the spider in The Wild Wild West for instance) and can run forever, weapons that are insane and never run out of ammo.

During this time, we had some pretty ingenious inventors; Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, the Wright Brothers, Ida Henrietta Hyde, Andrew Alford, Henry Ford. Things were being invented on nearly a daily basis. The Band-Aid, the ballpoint pen, the radio, crayons, the light bulb, the zipper.

So when you think “Steampunk”, we’re talking about an age when anything was possible. You could be in a situation, and you need a widget in order to survive. It would be nothing to just whip up said widget using a nail, a spring, cayan powder, and a glass bottle. Presto! The widget was born!

With that, however, there are many failures, and that’s almost more fun than the things that worked. You’d find yourself in a gun fight, and your inventor hands you a pistol that doesn’t work! Remember when Grandpa would get up and smack the TV because it just stopped working? Can you even imagine smacking your TV now? Oh, no. No, no!

My Steampunk isn’t on planet earth, but the society that I wrote about in The Hands of Tarot is just breaching this age. We’re playing around with different inventions. We’re discovering what we could build, embarking on a new age. It’s a lot of fun! There are things that aren’t working so well, and a few that are. Steampunk is for the geek. It just is. If you’re a geek, a nerd, a dork, then Steampunk is for you! Take it. Own it. Geek is the new black!

The thing I love the most about Steampunk is that the heroes are scientists. That is freaking amazing!
